Can connect using Remote Desktop, but can't send invitation

I have two computers on my LAN, one running XP Pro and the other Vista
Business. I can connect from the Vista machine to the XP machine using
Remote Desktop. I can also connect to the XP machine with Remote Assistance
if I use an emailed invitation (sent from the XP machine). However, I
cannot simply offer assistance to the XP machine from the Vista machine via
IP or computer name. Any idea what's preventing this from working?

The Remote Assistance "offer" functionality does not work in a workgroup
environment with XP computers only in a domain/trusted domain environment.
You should be able to use the file method to provide Remote Assistance to an
XP machine in your workgroup environment from the Vista machine. Create the
file on the XP machine and transfer it to the Vista machine.

FWIW, in my testing you can use Remote Assistance "offer" functionality
Vista Ultimate to Vista Ultimate in a workgroup environment.

Thanks for clarifying this. Is there any practical reason for restricting
the "offer" functionality to a domain environment?

That was a design decision by MS may moons ago. Personally I have no insight
into the reasoning...
