RDC won't connect from XP to Vista Home or Windows 7 Home Premium

bof

I'm trying to connect from an XP Pro machine to Vista Home and Windows 7
Home Premium machines, but get the error "this computer can't connect to
the remote computer" when attempting to connect from XP to Vista or 7.

other info:

XP RDC to another XP machine works fine
This is over a LAN only, the machines are on the same subnet.
The switch is a simple non-configurable one.
I've tried to connect using machine name and IP address, same result.
I've enabled "allow remote desktop connections"
I've enabled "allow earlier versions to connect"
I've switched both local firewalls off.

Any advice?

Hi Bob, thanks for your reply.

I don't have the Windows 7 machine currently available however on the
Vista machine:

an you telnet the port 3389?

No port 3389 does not open a telnet session
(not sure if this is relevant but nor does port 23 open a connection,
however port 139 does open a connection)

Also can you access each other between Vista and windows 7?

Not quite sure what you're asking here, I can use Windows file sharing
from the XP machine to access files on the Vista machine, but not vice
versa as file sharing is disabled on XP machine. The Vista machine can
see that the XP machine exists on the network.

1. The RDC uses port 3389 so that you must make sure you can telnet port
3389.
2. In the Subject, it says "RDC won't connect from XP to Vista Home or
Windows 7 Home Premium". So that I ask if you can access Vista or windows 7
from other windows 7 or Vista.

Apologies Bob, click reply, not follow-up

OK in that case I cannot connect to port 3389 using telnet. Using
WireShark I can say that the telnet port 3389 packets are arriving at
the Vista machine.

This I currently can't answer, but maybe in a few days time, as all my
machines/equipment are XP based with the exception of a single Vista
machine and a single 7 machine which is currently off site. When I have
the Vista and the 7 machine at the same time I'll test this out.

Many thanks

Maybe it's just me and I'm missing something here but it's my understanding
that none of the Home versions of Vista and Windows 7 have the ability to
act as the remote computer during an RDC session. Bottom line, you can't
connect "to" only "from" the Home versions of both operating systems. Take a
look at the answer to the first question in these two FAQs.

Remote Desktop Connection: frequently asked questions: Windows 7

You would need to have the Business or Ultimate version of Vista and the
Professional or Ultimate version of Windows 7 installed on your other
computers in order to connect to them using RDC.

Notice how the XP computer your able to connect to is running XP
Professional. That's the key, Professional = RDC to and from, Home = RDC
from only.

If you want to connect remotely to the computers running the Home versions
of Windows you might want to look into a program like Team Viewer or one of
the many free VNCs available on the internet.

Good luck

Thanks, I'd failed to find that, it does appear to answer the question.

TBH I do normally use VNC, even for XP, as I also need to remote into
other OSs, but the version I have doesn't work under Vista (nor I
suspect 7). Can you recommend a free version that runs under Vista and
7?

I've only used one VNC version and that was a few years ago. The program was
called UltraVNC. According to their web site it works with all the recent
versions of Windows.

http://www.uvnc.com/index.html

Shortly after I started using UltraVNC I read a response on this newsgroup
which suggested Team Viewer as an alternative. I tried it and haven't looked
back. I use it to connect to the XP Home Edition machine I have. Once again,
it's supposed to work with all of the latest versions of Windows. Here's
their web site.

"Home" products don't have the hosted side of Remote Desktop.
Professional/Business or above only.

I suggest the free (for personal use) TeamViewer product. Install Host on
the machines you want to get to and the full product on machines you are
remoting from *(you can also just install the full product on all the
machines if they will serve both purposes.)

With TeamViewer, the NAT configuration, the firewall configuration, etc -
all are of no-concern.
