Boot Problems, Keeps Restarting

T

Thom @ Pewaukee

I've read the 7/12/04 "Boot Problems". This seems to be
similar to my problem. I originally listed my issue in
New Users, "Keeps Restarting" 7/12/04.

The 7/12/04 "Boot Problems" talks about the recovery
console. How would I get there? I've also read something
about a repair option. I can't find that either.

I have a new XP home edition. I couldn't find the driver
for my printer and the add a printer operation wouldn't
work. I reloaded XP. Towards the end of the install, it
restarted my computer, went through the motions of
restarting, but never opened to a window, and restarted.
This cycle keeps going. I've checked the bios, set it to
boot from my CD, nothing changed, keeps restarting. I
tried the XP CD in my CDRW, keeps restarting. I do get
that blue screen flash (too fast to read), mentioned
in "Boot Problems".

I did try to fdisk from my old 98SE boot disk. I deleted
the partition, but could not create a new partition. I
got a message something to the effect of "disk full cannot
create partition". Nothing changed.

How do I get to recovery consule? Do I use my 98SE floppy
startup disk?

try booting to windows recovery console and
running "diskpart", ive found that sometimes the win 98
startup disk will not work correctly.

If you have the original win xp disk it should be on there. if not you can download it from microsoft as talked about in the article 310994. just do a search in the microsoft knoledge base and follow the instructions for down load. you might also want to check out the commands that the recovery console can execute, as they are somewhat different from win9x.

I have the original xp disk, but can't open it. I put the
disk in and it just keeps restarting, never gets to a
screen, except the one that says its restarting. The only
thing that seems to read is my 98se start-up floppy.

the recovery console program will make a six floppy disk set that you can boot your computer with just like the win 98 disk. you can download it on any computer and then run the program and it will ask for six blank floppies. If your computer keeps rebooting when trying to boot from cd you might try hitting the c key during boot up as some computer manufacturers put that in the bios.

I tried to download 310994 this weekend my home laptop.
The prompt didn't ask for floppy disks. I tried it quite
a few times. Eventually I saved it to my hard drive.
Copying from the hard drive doesn't give me the prompt to
copy to the floppy either. I tried to reply to your
suggestion, but the laptop wouldn't let me do that
either. I'm responding from my office computer now.

Also, this whole community newsgroup window is different
here than on the laptop. I can't search for my subject.

Meanwhile my home PC sits stagnating. I don't understand
why I didn't get the prompt to copy to my floppy.

I do appreciate your help and will keep trying.

The options from the Web Site are Open or Save. I opened
it and it didn't give me the floppy drive prompt. I saved
it, browsed and selected my a drive and it told me the
drive didn't have enough capacity. I, then, saved it to
my hard drive and from there opened it, but still didn't
get the prompt. It opened, did something and closed.
I'll try again, maybe I didn't get the whole program
copied.

Thanks

First you will need to download the program to the
desktop or somewhere else on the harddrive where you will
be able to find it, then after it is finished downloading
you will need to click on the new icon to start the
program, it will then ask for a floppy to be inserted in
the a: drive to begin creating the disks.

Tried it again at home. I click download, get the promt to save or open. I selected open. It runs and when done, shows and agreement. I click yes, I agree. A small black, rectangular box appears (like when I run cms), and disappears is seconds. Nothing more happens. The same thing happens when I open it from a folder in my hard drive. I tried the other utility also. I think it was 1a.

I tried it again this morning. www.bootdisk.com took me
to the www.microsoft.com/downloads....and on and on and
on...BD5AFEE126D8. I downloaded again, agreed to the
terms, a black box came and went (I think it said
something about downloading to floppy. It's fast.) and
waited and waited, but no prompt to insert a floppy or a
prompt asking where to copy. I'm wondering if there's
some security thing that I'm not aware of. My computer at
the office, here, doesn't have a floppy drive.

I'm glad you're as patient as I. This computer stuff does
intrigue me.

What next?

I tested this link from my computer this morning and was
able to download to my desktop, click on the program,
agree to the terms, and make the floppies.
