Windows XP keeps restarting

My Windows XP computer shutdown on its own and now it keeps restarting.

I can start it in safe mode and have run a virus scan using AVG in safe mode
and nothing was found although it was unable to scan some files in the Crypto
subdirectory and other security files as it said they were in use.

I was going to attempt a Windows XP repair. However my original product
disk is SP2 and I have upgraded to SP3. Can I still do a repair from my
product disk or do I need an SP3 disk? If I need an SP3 disk can I use any
SP3 disk? Do I have to uninstall IE7 before I do this? Is there anything
else I can attempt before a repaid

Also if the repair does not work, basically I have the same question for a
re-install. Do I re-install from the original disk and then download the
upgrade to SP3?

You need an SP3 disk. You can use Auto Streamer to make one.

No, you need one that is like yours: OEM or Retail, Home or Pro.

Yes.

Yes and that's what I would do instead of wasting my time with a repair.
As you can get into Safe Mode, I trust you backed up all your important
data while you were there, yes?

A lot of restart/shut down problems are heat-related. Check the inside of
the case for dust build-up around the fans and heatsinks.

Also, try downloading MalwareBytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and
SuperAntiSpyware http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html and running
them to further check for malware.
If malware is found and taken care of, it may be possible to do a System
Restore to a date before you started having the shutdown issues, if it
wasn't too long ago, and if the malware (if there) didn't turn SR off.

If that turns out to not be the problem, and you have access to another PC,
you can slipstream SP3 on to your WinXP SP2 installation disk. See:
How to Slipstream Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://www.howtohaven.com/system/slipstream-xp-service-pack-3.shtml
I believe if you try to do a repair install, you'll have to revert back to
IE6 first. I'm not sure; maybe someone else will come back with an answer to
that.

if the computer is stable
in safe mode,

then you might try executing
a clean boot.

click on start>run>msconfig

then under startup tab, disable
all the line items/entries by
unchecking them.

next go to services tab, "hide"
all microsoft services and what
remains can be unchecked.

then reboot and see if normal
mode is stable.
