I will assume, given what you have presented - you knew about the issue with
some HP systems with AMD processors and yours was such a system. Did you
therefore follow the instructions from HP in order to prevent the issue from
occuring?

Prevent it by applying the patch:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com:80/ewfrf/...ex?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=pv-60484-2

Already have the problem, follow the instructions:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01457284

You may need to perform a repair installation. You will need an updated
Windows XP CD. I suggest contacting HP.

Just out of curiosity, does a Recovery Console have to match the
Service Pack level of the OS you're trying to repair ? "tnttom25"
tried to use Recovery Console and it didn't offer his C: as an
option. It that a Service Pack level issue ?

Because if HP had installed from the CD or some unattended process instead
of imaging from an Intel based Windows XP image - those with AMD processors
and such would not have had this problem. The Repair (In-Place) Install
would recognize and install the correct drivers/HAL for your computer.

That is, unless the did not give you an actual installation CD and only
restoration/recovery media to restore the original image that was on the
machine. Thus why I suggested you contact HP. They are responsible for
this and for your OEM support for Windows XP.
