Can XP updates be applied in building a slipstream XP OS disk

B

Bob F

I would be really nice to apply all available XP updates in building a
slipstream disk, so I wouldn't have to update every time I re-install or repair
an installation, especially with the upcoming end of support.

I did incorporate SP3 into my current slipstream, which make me think it might
be possible.

Can this be done? How?

Yes. However, the Microsoft web page that provides the technical details has
been removed from the site (sic). But you can still access it from an web
archive site:

http://archive.is/VkQJm

Or through the Wayback Machine site.
The original URL was (long text warning):

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/deployment/winupdte.mspx

You can use nLite to easily slipstream a service pack and hotfixes, as well
as remove some unneeded features or integrate device drivers (e.g.: SATA
drivers).

On that page, manual integration of a hotfix is done like this.

KB99999.exe /integrate:"C:\My extracted or slipstreamed XP CD folder"

That page is a little hard to read because the right side of the text is cut
short.

That one seems to just for windows server

I greatly appreciate your help. I think what I will do is rebuild a system
starting with my current slippstreamed XP disk, add the WSUS updates, then
carefully record everything else that I need to update after that and try to add
the all that and the WSUS data to the slipstream.

Take a look through the NLite instructions,
and see if the issue is covered there ?

I couldn't see any problem. I'm a bit puzzled though. That page has two
tabs, labelled Text and Image. The Text one seems to be all the text
(which when saved as a full web page comes to 132 kB); the Image one
(which leads to http://archive.is/VkQJm/image) seems to be an image of
the top part of the page: maybe that's how that archive site operates.

Both show "Updated: March 30, 2005" (that's cut and pasted from the text
one). But the Image one has "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 TechCenter"
in black on the grey bar near the top.

Would that have to be done for every hotfix?

I'll be interested to read how you get on!

OK. I've gone through several iterations of using nLite on XP Pro, adding WSUS
downloaded files a couple passes, then running windows update and listing the
files it wanted to download. I found several that didn't take on the first
passes through WSUS, and did another nLite pass on those, then ran windows
update again, and went to the windows site to find the download files by KB#
there. Incorporated those using nLite again, with a couple passes of nLite,
windows update. Then ran WSUS updater again a couple passes. After the last
pass, Windows Update shows KB890830 Malicious software removal tool, KB2934207
End of support notification (which I deliberately avoided), KB2749655, KB970430
and KB905474 Genuine advantage notification as files still "needed". KB2749655
doesn't not seem to result in any download, even after the validation prosess.
It just displays a "genuine value" page.

I have a disc, which along with WSUS seems to get me pretty close to the full
update state. I am about burned out on this for today, but I'll try nLite'ing
the WSUS files again later, and I guess I should run the whole process on XP
Home too, since I have a couple copies of that also. Hopefully, the files I have
already downloaded should take care of that.

Windows quit letting me activate online the last time. I had to phone.

What a day!
