I would like to have a slipstreamed XP installation which in addition to xp
with sp2, would also contain windows updates current as of the time I did
the slipstream. In this way I can perform a fresh XP installation, and be
most of the way up to date, minus any updates that may've come out between
the time I made the slipstreamed updates and my fresh XP install.
Can this be done? If so, how would I go about getting the files for the
various windows updates, since when you do a windows update your PC just
updates, and I'm not sure if it stores the actual update packages anywhere.
I have instructions on how to slipstream service packs in to an xp
installation, I'm just wondering if I can slipstream windows updates
themselves in as well, and if so how?

You can. For the most part.
The /integrate switch for each update or one of many slipstream helper
applications.
The command line is simply the full IT version of the patch name followed
by:

/integrateath

Where path is replaced with your copy of the Windows XP CD/i386 directory.

Now is a good time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

addendum CD and/or use a post-install script to install them for you in an

You can do that, but ... you'll be updating it about every Tuesday after the
latest round of updates. Pick a point an dlet auto update do the rest, IMO.

Slipstreaming often fails if it's not done just right: Be certain you
actually TEST it fully! Otherwise, at the worst time ... .

Hmmm....

I have to disagree with it often failing.
The third party apps virtually always work and there are even simple batch
scripts that do it for you.
I have modified and created many of the scripts myself.
I'd say it has gotten extraordinarily easy to do.

Admittedly though - you never EVER get rid of your original... for more
reasons than just a good backup - but that certainly falls in there.
