Boot Drive Changed?

Have Test PC installed with XP pro fully updated and apart from firewall/AV
nothing else.

Downloaded and installed from Microsoft trial copy of the new Office (14).
No problems. Switched off. Didn't touch PC for about a week but when
switched on nothing. No disk detected??. Used recovery console and boot
drive changed from C: to I:

As wanted to run Windows 7 (trial copy downloaded some time back) and Office
14, ran recovery console and fixboot I:, reformated and loaded Windows 7.
OK. restarted and ran updates. No problems. Some hardware updates
installed but on reboot back where I started. Drive letter changed. Looks
like I'm stuck in Windows 7 Start-up repair attempting to repair. Been doing
it for 5 minites plus.

Can any one help with why drive letter is being changed in XP (or 7).

Sounds like a hardware problem. Start with easy stuff first. Recheck all the
cabling, run the diagnostic software for the hard drive, available from the
maker's website. Check the RAM with memtest86+.

Thanks for reply.

Hardware checked and no problems witth memory or hard drives. As a test
machine I reloaded win 7 again - this created system partition and NTFS
partition,on another hard disc drive. No problems; can boot, reboot etc.
Loaded office 14. All ok. Can't remember whether I rebooted or not.
Switched off

Today turned on and disc drive failure - not system disc !?!. Tried to run
bootable version of Acronis Disc Director but mosuse not recognised. Run
Hiron's Boot CD and Acronis again. though mouse not working, got to screen
that clearly shows reason not booting into windows ..............the system
recovery partition (100MB) is shown as C:/ (boot drive) and NTFS as D:/

Why does it keep beinng changed ??

I was unable to recover the partition even after using Partition Table
Doctor. I therefore have reformatted and re-installed Windows 7. Apart from
this, I'll just load AV and test over next couple of days just starting and
rebooting etc.

I'll then load Office 14 Tech Review as I have suspicion all's not well
here. It's funny that without this installed I've not had a problem but when
installed all of a sudden drive letter changes. THIS ALSO HAPPeNS WITH XP
PRO INSTALLED !!??!!

I might test this again as I have a spare drive to load onto
