blue screen stop error

Computer worked fine Friday then Monday found blue screen error msg "A
problem has been detected & windows shut down to prevent damage to your
computer. An attempt was made to write to read only memory" Msg goes on to
talk about new hardware/software being installed. I had automatic updates
set for Sun @ 3am and think something went wrong w/an update. I have not
manually installed any hard/software. Tech Info on msg Stop 0x000000BE,
oxF82040BF, oxoE5EB121, oxF9E094Fo, oxooooooob.
Any suggestions!

Does the boot? If not does it boot in safe mode?

What is the version of your Windows XP CD as it appears on the CD?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry:
Thanks for the help unfortunately there isn't anything there. The computer
only boots up in Safe Mode, there is nothing in the device manager (blank
screen) and when I followed your directions for "sigverif.exe" (without
quotes) it said "no system files were found" Any other suggestions?

What is your anti-virus programme? Are you using Zone Alarm?

Can you access System Restore in Safe Mode?
http://bertk.mvps.org/

If you have Norton or Zone Alarm you may have to deal with these
programmes before trying to a access a restore from before the problem
arose.

Don't have access to the CD today. Anti-virus program Norton has expired.
Geek Squad said either a virus or a software problem. I'm thinking software
because it was on automatic update and we may have had a power outage during
that time. Am running out of ideas.

You would be better off replacing Norton with something like AVG 7.5
Freeware. From what I have heard you should stay away from the Geek
Squad.

Earlier you gave this information:
Tech Info on msg Stop 0x000000BE,
oxF82040BF, oxoE5EB121, oxF9E094Fo, oxooooooob.

What appears in the next few lines?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have
solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

Does that mean you are running without AV protection? You are playing with
fire.

As it happens, Norton is probably the *worst* AV program availoble. Download
and install one of the freeware choices ASAP. I recommend Avast!

Geek Squad said either a virus or a software problem.

They may or may not be right, but I would distrust any diagnosis that came
such a source.
