when trying to upgrade from windows 98 second edition to
windows xp home edition I receive a blocking issue saying
must fix issue before upgrading. issue is microsoft shared
fax client. how do I uninstall this?

Check if you can uninstall this in Windows 98 from the Control Panel >
Add/remove programs.
If no, try a clean-install of Windows XP instead. This will usually
also lead to a more stable system.

Do a search for the file "fxsclnt.exe", back it up to a safe place, and
delete it.
