bitmap pics cause computer to go 'berserk'

For some reason my pc has decided to only allow me to
save pictures as bitmap.
To get a jpg or gif, I have to send the picture to myself
by email (making banners)

When I click on the saved bitmap image, my computer
starts to open multiple windows, multiple download
windows and mulitiple paint windows. This process keeps
going and going and I have to use task manager to end
task, but it keeps going through the opening of all
processes listed until I eventually beat it.
Can anyone help me with this problem please?

Thanks John, I will give those things a go. I don't have
AOL so that part won't work.
I think my pc is "allergic" to bitmap files!
