only format to save pics is bitmap...why?

I have windows xp home and I use to be able to save
graphics from the internet or mail. It would
automatically figure out if it was a jpg or gif. Now the
only way to save a graphics of any sort is in bitmap
form. Any ideas on how to change it back? Thanks.
