Hi Dennis,
You haven't given us enough information to get definitive help.

Is this a home machine, or one used in an office?

Which version of Windows?

Are you on a large, managed network, where access to AutoUpdate is
restricted? Is there a WSUS server on the network?

How to ask a question

I had a similar problem on one of my machines. It got half way through the
install (it seemed to have just finished uninstalling the previous version)
and then gave up. When I downloaded the file, I failed to save it, but told
it to "Run" directly. During the install, it told me to close all IE
windows, which appeared to delete the temporary folder in which the WD
install file was running.
I succeded the install as follows following this.
Make sure WD Beta 1 is properly uninstalled (no entry left in the Add/Remove
Programs). Reboot to clean everything up.
Download WD Beta 2 and save it (anywhere). Run the install from where you
saved it.
Hope this helps.

Let me see if I understand your posts. You can install Windows Defender
with apparent success, but you can't get updates without receiving error
messages?

Can you go to Windows Update, do an express scan, and apply all offered
updates? Please repeat this process until no further updates are offered,
or until Windows Defender definitions are successfully offered and
installed.

Does that work?
