updates fail - 0x80240016

I just installed Defender Beta 2, and the manual updates fail. (I never had
any such problem with Beta 1 or Giant). The error message is 0x80240016:
"The device does not recognize the command." What causes this one? Thanks
for any pointers.

When you say "manual updates"--does that mean an update via Help, about,
check for updates?

Please try updating this via WindowsUpdate--see if you are offered Windows
Defender signature updates.

Several users have reported that once they were able to update via Windows
Update, a similar error went away.

Sorry, I should have been more explicit about how the error comes about.
When I installed and then opened Defender, the window said my definitions
hadn't been updated in 39 days (as I recall), so I clicked the Check For
Updates button. I got a pop-up message on the icon in my quick launch area
saying that Windows Defender was connecting to the Internet to search for
updates. Shortly thereafter I got the message with this error code. Maybe I
should have used the automatic update feature instead? Thanks for the
guidance.

Please go to Windows Update and do a check for updates.

If updates for Windows Defender signatures are offered, install them.

I believe that you'll get updates, and that this will resolve henceforth the
difficulty getting them within the program.
