I have downloaded and reinstalled Windows Defender as follows:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0
Definition Version: 1.0.0.0

But I get a balloon popup error when trying to update. It is not my internet
security because i turned that off.

Error message as follows:
Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80070663. This path
package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that
you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a

I have run into the same problem. I even turned off my antivirus program and
turned off the defender program, ran the update. It failed twice then ran
successfully.

I rebooted the computer and the icon in the bottom right still has the
orange exclamation point. Says that my program has not been updated in 14
days. I attempt to update and says that things have been updated. I close
and the Orange exclamation point is still there...

Hey Microsoft... you paying attention here? We are your beta testers and
would appreciate a fix for this as soon as possible!

Thanks!

You need to update to new version 1347.

Un-installed, deleted the mci from the desktop. Downloaded the newest
version and installed from a folder on D: installed and updated ran and
everything is clear. The icon is no longer in the bottom right, although
when I run the setup on it, it states that real time protection is on... just
no icon.

I got the same situation yesterday when trying to update from within Windows
Defender (About box). I found that I was able to update by going to Windows
Update.

This morning I checked again from within Windows Defender and it told me
that there are no new updates. However when going to Windows Update again I
got the newest definitions.

John:
In Defender>Tools>Options>Real-time protection options>click on Always at
the end.

Yep, so here's what I done.

First, install Windows Installer CleanUp Utility if you don't already have
it. Direct download link here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe

Then run it the program once it is installed, and scroll down to where it
says Windows Defender Signatures. Highlight it, click Remove and OK. Then
exit.

Then do this (as described on http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105 )
Start > Run
type in Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
(you can copy this text and paste it into the Run box)

Then I think there should be an error that says it can't be removed, or it
is successful. Also, the error message on Windows Defender should go away.

However, the definitions are probably not up-to-date.

Then download Windows Defender again:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Install it. It will say the option to upgrade it so choose that one, and it
will reinstall the defs. Then try updating again. You should end up with:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1396.12
