Defender Updates?

When I try to update the Windows Defender's definition files via the
procedure contained in 915105, Error message after you reinstall Windows
Defender Beta 2: “Windows Defender definitions haven’t been updatedâ€, I get a
pop up message that says "This patch package could not be opened. Verify
that the patch package exist and that you can access it, or contact the
application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer patch
package."

Can anyone tell me where to go from here. I don't know what the message
means or what to do about it.

Dick,

My machines do NOT update properly either automatically are manually. If you
read all of the other posts, it appears that many are having the same
problem. After I complained to MS, they wrote me back that they are aware of
the issue.

I would continue to use the program and also use the free Ad-Aware program
as a back-up. The free Rootkit Reveal and Pure Dos Version of F-Prot anti
virus are good utilities to run weekly also.

And for those that have problem updating their Defender:

Before removing a program it must be stop and exited.
Stop and close Defender as follows: Click the Tool tab / General Settings /
scroll down to Real time protection options and uncheck Turn on real-time
protection (recommended) / click Save and exit. If you are also using
Windows Live
One Care, go to View and change settings and on the Antivirus tab select Off,
click Ok and exit. Then follow the instructions sent to me by Vanessa Hu, a
Microsoft Support Engineer.

Step 1:
============
1. Click Start, click Run, type "msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" (without quotation marks) in the Open
box, and then click OK.
2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from this
following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
3. Run the utility from Start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean Up.
4. Select all Windows Defender related entries from the list (if there are)
and click Remove.
Step 2:
============
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Download and install Windows Defender from the following link and reboot
the computer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en
3. Please go to Microsoft Update:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and install the updates for
Windows Defender.

Done all the above the Defender updated and work to perfection.

My Defender Beta 2 is saying it hasn't updated in 18 days, but when I click
to get updates it says it is up-to-date!!!
Also Windows Update continually offers me "Definition Update 1.14.1389.7 for
BETA Windows Defender (KB915597)" which I install but it is there again next
time!!!

Sorry to butt into this thread but 'New' doesn't open a new thread for me.

Nigel:
I use XP Pro SP2 with all updates. Had your same Defender problem for almost
1.5 month. On April 1, I purchased OneCare and that gave me access to a less
than 24 hours MS support engineer problem reply, all because Defender is part
of it. The solution given was the complete removal of the old corrupted
Defender and reinstallation. It worked for me. Follow all the steps carefully
and it will workfor you.
