Windows Defender not installing

P

Phil Anderson

I am logged on as an Administrator and have downloaded the latest Windows
Defender successfully through all the validation etc., but it will not
install. The error message reads"Service 'Windows Defender' (winDefend)
failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient priviledges to start system
services."... and proceeds to cancel the installation so I end up no Defender
installed.
Can anyone help ?

I am using XP Pro and have run Hunters anti spiware scanner which came up
clean and Reg Cure which corrected some stuff, but WD will still not install.
I also tried it on the new desktop at home (similar new installation of XP
Pro) and WD will not install with the same message. All Windows updates have
been installed. This appears to be Microsoft validation Bug/problem!! (all MS
validation stuff came up OK?).
Frustrating!

I am having the same problem. I'm logged in with Admin privileges, WS
installed correctly (apparently), but the service won't start. I checked in
Services and WD is there set to start automatically. When I clicked on
"start service", the WD Service started for a second, and then terminated
with the following message:

"The Windows Defender service on Local Computer started and then stopped.
Some services stop automatically if they have not work to do, for example,
the Performance Logs and Alerts service.I apologize - first post. I am
having the same problem. I'm logged in with Admin privileges and WD will not
complete installation. I checked the Services and WD is there set at
"automatic". When I went to manually start the service, it started for an
instant, and then terminated with the error."

I agree, very frustrating!

Now! Me thinks this one of your testers. Tom E. told me to expect this ;)
Can I have time to sleep on it? I`m a terrible lateral thinker. Do I hear
"NO"? Okay .....

Have to admit when I first saw the Ms. salutation I wondered if it meant
Microsoft or Miss. Then I thought. Naa! Even thought you might be talking
exotic ladies (you know, the Ms = Miss de do da !!) ....... Then I got to
thinking. How could that be on an MS newsgroup perpetrated by our dear
Engel? Deary me!! "Your`re a naughty boy Stu - don`t think like that again."!

I think i have sorted this now. the one i dl is for pc running 64bit where
as my pc only runs on 32bit.

you need to check whether your pc is 32 or 64 bit
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218/en-us)

if the version you dl is windowsdefenderx64.msi this is suitable for pc
runing on 64bit. For version that's suitable for 32bit, search for
windowsdefender.msi on microsoft.com. it's about 4.91mb, the other one is 7mb
