Installing Windows Defender

I am trying to install Windows Defender on a client's machine and having
some problems. I had Microsoft AntiSpyware on the computer, uninstalled it,
and now I'm trying to install Defender. Every time I run the .exe program,
it goes through the wizard and gets to the point where it tries to actually
install the program, I get the following error message:

Service 'Windows Defender Service' (WinDefend) failed to start. Verify that
you have sufficient privleges to start system services.

Retry Cancel

Clicking on Retry doesn't work. When you click on Cancel, it takes you all
the way out of the installation process.

I have looked at the KB915052 article and followed those insructions. They
actually worked on another computer in that office, but it doesn't help on
this particular computer.

Any information that you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Hello Kay,

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
adinistratºr.

This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an admin.

Can you gº to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs?

There are many pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and
signature update with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

Hi Engel,

Thank you for your quick reply. I really appreciate your help. To answer
your questions:

1. I am logged on as administrator.

2. I have installed all of the Express and Custom updates.

It still doesn't install - it gets to the window with the bars going accross
showing the installation process. Once it gets to the point of starting
system services, it fails with the error message I have in my original
message. It stops installation and stays on the screen until you click on
cancel. All the bars that have already gone accross the screen back off and
it says Windows Defender was not installed.

The computer is connected to a SBS 2003 network, and there are no programs
running when we are trying to install the software. Other computers on the
network have Defender installed. I did have this same problem on one of the
other computers, but going through the instructions in the KB915052 article,
corrected the problem.

Hopefully this additional information will help.
