Windows Defender not loading on System Tray

E

E-Double

We are setting the Windows Defender Tools/Options setting to Always be on the
System Tray (as opposed to only showing up when detects action to take), but
for some reason the little icon will not show up on the System Tray. We have
tried to uninstall and reinstall Windows Defender, and initially after
reinstalling it works okay and shows up on the System Tray. But after
rebooting once the WinDefender systray icon disappears again from the
systray. Not sure if this is a corrupt WinDefender install or a systray
issue. TIA for any help on this one to keep that icon loaded on
the systray...

Hi E-Double,

The Windows XP System Tray(AKA Notification Area) has a long standing
reputation for being flakey with regard to icons.

Having said that, there are some possible workarounds for the issue you are
having.

The first that comes to mind is one involving the Registry, take a look at
the following key in the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Make sure the value entry for Windows Defender looks like the
following(including the double quotes).

"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide

instead of

%Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide

Some other possible workarounds for missing System Tray icons can be found

Good luck,
