This has likely been asked many times before, but I'm wondering if it's
possible to backup your computer to DVDRW using Microsoft's back utility in
Windows XP? I tried to name my backup file and it says "The backup file
name could not be used. Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have
sufficient access."

Thanks.

NO - you can back them up to your hard drive and then copy them to the
DVDRW.

No. You need third party software.

You can if you use UDF Packet writing software like INCD from Nero.
I use a DVD-/+RW format it with INCD and proceed to do back ups directly to the
DVD.

Thanks guys. I'll give that shot Peter. I use Nero so I'll check that out.

Only to a very limited extent (set by how much you can get on a single
DVD). The NTBackup cannot write there direct, but needs an auxiliary
packet writing system (eg Direct CD; InCD; DLA) to allow use of a DVD as
output medium from a program. And then NTBackup will not see the result
as removable, but as it it were another fixed hard drive.

It is strictly tape oriented, I think included for the benefit of people
bringing things forward from NT

Could I backup using microsoft backup my entire drive over my network and
save the entire file on a another hard drive on a different computer? And
if so, would it erase anything else on that second computer's hard drive or
just save it as a large file and keep the other data on that?

alan

I created a backup folder on my networked computer and have used NTbackup to
back up files to that folder.
It did not erase anything..it just created the backup file with whatever name I
designated. It took a lot less time than burning it to a DVD.
I have also backed up from HD0 to HD1...eg drive "C" to drive "D" on the same
system.

Partly right. You have to have a third party packet writing package
like InCD or Roxio's version (whatever it is called now) to write
directly to the DVDRW using drive letter access. Once that is in
place, NTBackup will write to the DVD drive. What it won't do is
allow the backup volume to "span" DVDRWs. You are stuck with only
what you can cram onto on disc.

No, 100% correct. What comes stock with Win32 OS's is junk. You *need* 3rd party software.

The only 100% there is YOUR OPINION. Millions of us use NTBackup on a
daily basis and it works just fine. It was not designed to be used on
CD/DVD media, but on Tape - and Tape, believe it or not, is still the
preferred medium for server backups.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

No bubble burst. Experience. There are severe limitations in the stock backup software.
3rd party software doesn't have these limitations.

If you use NTBackup, you are asking for future problems. Problems when you need and rely on
that backup the most.

I had the same question, but let me add a little more detail on the
question.

Is there any software (cheap) that allows easy backup AND restore to/from
DVD, without having to re-install XP before restoring? I know it's
stretching a bit to ask to restore without XP, but I've seen this work
perfectly in linux, so I would really want to have one-shot restore of XP
just like linux.
