attachments in Windows Mail

Using Vista Home Premium - can't get attachments or attachments changed to
..dat file & can't use.
I'm trying to send an Excel ".xls" (or Word ".doc") attachment from work
(Windows XP using Outlook) to home (Vista). Windows mail either strips the
attachment (doesn't say that it has been blocked, it's just not there) or
changes it to "winmail.dat" which is gobbly gook when I open it. I have
cleared the options of "do not allow attachment . . . " So far I am
thoroughly disgusted with Vista, but I've heard that I'm not alone in that
opinion.
CAN ANYBODY HELP / OFFER SUGGESTIONS?

Windows Mail is not behaving any differently than OE would have
under the same circumstances.
It sounds like you are using Outlook at work, and have it configured
to send using the non-compatible RTF format. Change your Outlook
format to plain text or HTML so that non-Outlook recipients can
understand it.

Are you closing the file in all other programs before you try to send it?

On your home computer, click on Tools, then Options, then Read.
If there is a check mark in the box before Read all messages in plain
text, click on this box and then Apply. Click on OK.

Do you have any programs on your home computer for reading
files with a .xls or .doc extension? As far as I know, Vista comes
without any included. Your PC maker may have included more
programs than just Vista when they made it, though.

What if any antivirus programs do you have? Some of them cause
various problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

I've read that Outlook usually sends in the RTF format, which Windows
Mail can't handle. You might check if there other options in Outlook.

Change Outlook to Plain Text. If that doesn't do it then your Exchange
server at work is set to convert everything to RTF.
