Application Event Log doesn't show entries

Mike

Greetings,

I have a WIN2K Server with SP4. When I look in the
Application Event Log, it appears that it's empty, however
in the status bar it says there are over 900 items in it.
Refreshing, rebooting, or anything else doesn't help.
Weird.

I can save the log, then reopen it and the items appear,
but in the original Application Event Log, they just won't
show up.

I can't find anything in the KB on this, so any help would
be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Maybe your application log got saved with a filter on. At
the top of the window, does it say "Filtered view showing
0 of xxxxx events"?

If so, you can fix it. Start > Run > MMC, then from the
Console menu open eventvwr.msc. From the View menu select
All records", then save the console settings when you exit
MMC.

You can also set the column widths to something friendlier
this way. (Or is that how the problem arose in the first
place?)

The temporary fix;
You might try changing the file properties to "Overwrite as needed"

Then; Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services|Event Log Service|General,
set the "Startup Type:" to "Disabled" restart the pc, then delete (or move)
the corrupt *.evt file(s) from %windir%\system32\config then set the Event
Log Service "Startup Type:" back to "Automatic", restart for effect.

The more permanent fix;
