why does event viewer stop logging logs?

no matter how many times I reboot the windows 2k prof workstation, no matter
how many times I clear the existing logs (sec, applic and system), referesh,
reopen the event viewer window, the logs do not appear. I also restored the
event viewer defaults, thinking may be I changed something in the past, but
that did not help either.
I am not able to troubleshoot problems like this, as I am unable to see what
has been logged (if anything).
At some point I did see that in the system logs, it showed me some kbytes of
content (in the status bar) and I did see that I was "offered" to scroll
down, as if I had the complete list of events in front of me, but I don't.
There is nothing to see in the right screen, only in the left screen there
are the 3 main log types.

today I retried all possible clrearing measures and rebooted several times,
and now it is finally logging logs again..
what can I do to prevent event viewer to stop logging events?

Any help please?
Thanks, Eric.

Have you checked the Event Log service in Services? It should be Started Auto

Always try the MS KB first before posting.
MS KB: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;KBHOWTO
And the answer could have already been posted, so try searching this and other newsgroups first.
