An internal application error has occured. Help please

I think it was after a power outage, but certain window
programs are not working. Whenever I try to access windows
media player, I receive the error, " An internal
application error has occured." This baffles me because
before this power outage (thanks Ivan) everything was
working and I could listen and view media. Another problem
is seen in Internet Explorer. No longer can I access
certain things. Certain websites are missing features and
buttons to navigate pages. The biggest indicator something
was askew in IE was the fact that when I went to
windowsupate, it simply would not load. My internet
connection was up, but I just could not access the page. It
seemed as if the page would load, yet nothing would come
up. I've tried redownloading windows media player, and I
still receive the same error message. I dont know what to
do about IE because I'm having to use FireFox right now
becausse when I try to reinstall IE the page wont load.
This is only certain pages and something is wrong. If any
further information is required, please tell me and I will
provide it.

Do an XP repair install. Note you will loose all updates and need to
apply them from the windows update site.
