Acrobat problem on XP Pro

I just picked up a new laptop with XP pro installed.

Downloaded and installed Acrobat reader 6.0 as a part of setting up the
computer.

Tried to install a software package that requires Acrobat. It wanted to
"install Acrobat reader", even though I had 6.0 installed.

I let it do it's thing, but the program has not yet run for me, despite many
attempts.

I then attempted to download a known good Acrobat file. The OS prompted
"this file requires Adobe Acrobat, do you want to install it?". On clicking
"OK", it proceeded to "unpack" Acrobat 5.0 from the hard drive. After it
was done, nothing happened. So, clicking on the same download file,
expecting it to now open, I got the same message. A vicious circle, so to
speak.

No matter what, with both Acrobat 6.0 and 5.0 loaded, no Acrobat file will
open on the computer. Without exception, attempting to open any acrobat
file will result in the same prompt, "this file requires Adobe Acrobat, do
you want to install it?".

I've tried uninstalling both versions of the program, installing either
version, restarted the machine 200 times, still same results.

Ideas would be appreciated, as one program that is essential to my business
is 1200 meg of Acrobat files and I'm stuck using my old 400 Celeron computer
to use them while my new state of the art, XP Pro equipped computer refuses
to load the same stuff. Not the way one expects things to turn out.

Thanks for any ideas.

Brute force removal. Open Explorer and delete both Acrobat Readers folders.

Download and install Acrobat Reader 6.01

Remove all known Adobe programs and then install the 6.01 version and you should be good to go. You have to many readers loaded so it doesn't know which one to use

Tried that, didn't do help. Should have noted in first post, loaded 6.0.1
on the system before ever trying to access an Acrobat file.

Thanks

Had the problem with no other reader loaded, but also have a couple of other
Adobe programs loaded. Will uninstall those tonight and give it a try.

Thanks
