Windows Installer/Acrobat Prof 6 Problem

I run XP Home with every update installed.
Acrobat Professional 6.0.1 with updates

As of late last week when I click on a PDF file I get Windows Installer
preparing to install
and then nothing happens.

If I open Acrobat and then go to folder open of file open and select the
file I have no problem.

I did a system restore for a date before the problem happened. This did not
help.

I removed windows installer and reinstalled with the latest version from the
Microsoft site. Again no improvement.

I also tried to uninstall Acrobat Prof 6 with all the updates. I first
uninstalled the updates newest first and then Acrobat 6.

I was unable to uninstall Acrobat 6 because I received the same message
Windows Installer preparing to install and then nothing happens.

I would appreciate some expert assistance.

Thanks

No expert assistance here, just a shot that may well work.

I use XP Home and Windows gets file associations screwed up all the time.

The way I resolve it is to open any folder and choose Tools/Folder Options.
Select the File Types tab. Go down the list and look for your Adobe or
Acrobat or PDF and see what app is associated with it/them. Highlight the
thing and delete it. If more than one instance, delete all of them and there
is likely a mess of others linked to your other apps if you have any. Delete
those too.

The next time after that when you click on a PDF file it should open as it
should and become associated as it should. If not, you should be presented
with a dialogue that asks what you want to open it with and you can take it
from there. Although, when you most need to access your program is when it
is most likely to fail.

A good alternative is to download Foxit (Foxit Reader?) free. No waiting
like Adobe makes you do to open files and in my experience, it doesn't get
messed up by Windows nor Adobe. (As far as I know, FoxIt applies to Adobe
(Acrobat) files only.)

When you want to uninstall a sticky substance don't rely on simple
Remove/Uninstall software. Crapware by Adobe, Microsoft, Symantec, and
others, require you to go into the Registry and remove every instance of
where it appears. Then reboot. Use a Registry cleaner because you may have
missed something or all the links may not have been broken regardless.

Because you have the most recent updates to something, especially in the
case of MicroSoft, it doesn't mean you are good to go. Microsoft often
issues bugware updates to look like they are trying to resolve something
they could care less about.

System Restore is not reliable. In fact, I wonder if it ever works at all.

Best Wishes.
