Acrobat Reader 8 Installation Question

J

Jim Reed

Good evening!

I have Acrobat Standard 6 installed and am current on all updates, and tried
to install Version 8 of Acrobat Reader on my Windows XP desktop, which alkso
is current on updates. I received the following error message:

"Error 1402. Could not open key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\PDF.PDFCTRL.6\CLSID. Verify you have
sufficient access or contact support personnel."

This is my home PC, so as far as I know I should have all access.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Thanks in advance for your
assistance! I tried posting this in the Acrobat NG, but got no replies.

Acrobat Reader is notorious for not liking a previous version installed when
installing a newer version.

First uninstall the old version; then install the new version.

I think in your case, uninstall the new version;
then install the old version
then uninstall the old version
then install the new version.

Then have a glass of JD, you deserve it.

good luck

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\PDF.PDFCTRL.6

On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
Select your user account from the list, and ensure that Full Control permissions is set to Allow.
Select "Administrators" group from the list, and give then Full Control permissions.
Click the Advanced button
Select the "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" check box.
Uncheck the "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here" check box.

Click Apply, and then click Yes when you are prompted to continue.
Click OK, and then click OK again.
On the Registry menu, click Exit.

Ramesh and Don,

Thank you both very much for your replies. Don's suggestion to
uninstall/install did not fix the problem, but the registry permission
changes below did the trick.

Don,
Sometimes you never know what will work until you try it. I'm very grateful
to all the knowledgeable people who volunteer their time in these
newsgroups. I don't post often, but I read and learn almost every day.
Thanks again!
Jim
