IE6 thumbnails !!!!!!!!!

I don't think many people used it which prolly explains why it was dropped -
If you've never used it:

Open your 'favorites' folder in windows
Choose View>Thumbnails
Wait a few seconds for the thumbnails to initialise (only once) and hey
presto!
Now isn't that the greatest?

I used to have a shortcut to my favorites on my desktop just for that reason

Alas IE7 poo-pooed on it - all i get now is blue 'e's (

I have found no benefit to IE7 so can I install IE6 on Vista?

Hi!

I am running Windows 2000 Professional and Internet Explorer 6 SP1. I did
updates to Windows and IE6 (no 7) and suddenly I cannot see the thumbnails
anymore. Live Search shows up blank on the right side of the screen. I have
been going nuts over this. Several community responses have not helped me get
my thumbnails back. I just don't know of anyone that does NOT use the
thumbnails around me. What is happening? Do you know?

Thumbnails work fine for me in IE 7, so long as the Favorite has a
favicon. Same as in IE 6.

Hi!

Does that work in Windows 2000 Professional? I cannot find where I can put a
"favicon" in my Favorites. I think you might be talking about XP or Vista. Am
I correct?

Internet Explorer 6 stores favicons in TIF. As soon as TIF is cleared,
the favicon is lost.

To learn how to save favicons, simply use "saving favicons" (without the
quotes) as a search term in Google or the search engine of your choice.

I think you're just talking about custom icons - I'm talking about a
thumbnail preview of the web page in IE6 which is quite different and no
longer supported

I have IE 6 here at work and there are no thumbnail previews of web
pages. Could you have been using a third party application?

Oh yes it is - it's called Quicktabs.....

Hi,

If you are comfortable working with the Registry, you can add the two
following Registry Keys to restore HTM||HTML Thumbnail views in Windows
Explorer.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
DWORD Value = Default
DATA Value = {EAB841A0-9550-11cf-8C16-00805F1408F3}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
DWORD Value = Default
DATA Value = {EAB841A0-9550-11cf-8C16-00805F1408F3}

If they already exist, make sure they are pointing to the correct CLSID
which is:

{EAB841A0-9550-11cf-8C16-00805F1408F3}

This CLSID points to "shimgvw.dll" which is the "Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer".

Good luck,

I have literally dozens of folders full of webpages & links (works equally
well with either) to show thumbnails which no longer work since upgrading
from IE6 to Vista/IE7 - but i don't know anyone else that's ever used this
feature & maybe it was dropped with a service pack - have you tried my
earlier suggestion - just open your favorites folder in windows explorer and
choose View>thumbnails - you may have to wait as much as a minute (depends
how many you have) for it to initialise all the thumbnails - you can provoke
this by right-click on the link and choose 'refresh' - but for sure it
worked in IE6 and i have had it confirmed this was dropped in IE7

I've had my Favorites set to display as thumbnails for 7 minutes now and
see nothing more than blue e's.

I use Windows Explorer almost exclusively to manage my Favorites and
have yet to see a page view as a thumbnail. If you see page views I'd
like to know how. (Although I personally don't see the usefulness in a
thumbnail sized version of a web page.)

Like i say, this functionality may have been removed with a service pack
(half-way-through IE6)

As far as how useful it was - it was as useful as any other type of
thumbnail - but it seems it didn't get much support which is prolly why they
dropped it

I intend to fire up my old XP machine and when i do i'll post some screen
shots

I found only one other post about the subject whilst looking for a solution:

I am a handicapped person who works under Windows 2000 SP4, with Internet
Explorer 6 SP1 constantly. The preview page thumbnails are extremely helpful
when working with limited mobility, to avoid looking at web pages unrelated
to my work.

After installing a recent Microsoft update, the thumbnails disappeared. All
I see is a blank page on the right side (preview) page of the screen. I have
contacted Microsoft and they are working on the issue. So far they have spent
two days and the case has been escalated to a senior engineer.

If Microsoft removed this functionality from Internet Explorer, many other
handicapped people will suffer. This is simply not acceptable!!!

I'm not doubting your sincerity for one second, but I would like to know
how a thumbnail-sized CNN or New York Times, for example, are useful to
you. How much information can you glean from any web page that is the
size of a thumbnail?

Leonard:

I use the thumbnails to avoid opening web sites that are totally irrelevant.
My mobility is very limited. I cannot "hover" over the name of a site to read
what it is about. Preview thumbnails are usually created by the owners of web
sites to show its contents and they don't disappear from the screen until one
of them is clicked on.

If you ever saw them, you might understand how they work and what use they
are to limited mobility handicapped persons. The Internet Explorer updates
should have said clearly that the update removed the functionality. I, for
one, would not have applied that update at all!

What you are describing does not sound like the thumbnails feature of
Windows explorer. It sounds more like something that is either coded
into a web page or a service provided by a third-party application.

If a web page designer has coded this into a web page that you are
viewing, and you do not see the thumbnail, that might be because you
have pop-up blocking turned on in Internet Explorer or in your security
software.

If this feature is implemented by third-party software, you may not be
seeing your thumbnails because the software is not installed on your
computer or is not compatible with Internet Explorer.

Please provide a web page URL that has the feature you are describing.
We can see the coding underlying the page.

Different type of "thumbnail", Leonard, and they're talking about Internet
Explorer.

Open Favorites then hover your cursor over a link; what appears is the
"thumbnail" they're talking about - more or less disaplays a /précis/ of the
page title as well as the URL. They persist for me in WinXP SP2/IE7; AFAIK,
this feature has not been removed by any IE version or update.

They aren't the thumbnails i'm posting about - the thumbnails I 'used to'
have are actual miniture pictures of the web page that you can see in
windows explorer view>thumbnails - they are buffered (as per the web page
itself) but can be updated via 'refresh' - they are certainly available in
IE5 & no longer available in IE7 and i deduce were actually made obsolete by
an IE6 service pack - I've discussed these many times & never heard of a
single person using them and prolly hence the demise - in IE7 i can have
small blue 'e's or big blue 'e's - Kelly's Korner had a registry tweak for
restoring thumbnails in Win XP (including .htm & .html)

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_thumbnail.exe

and i beleive a small mod could restore the same in Vista/IE7 & i look
forward to it - because of the addresses it may well work 'as is' for Win
XP/IE7
