to access the internet but it rings my house phone and
makes a constant ringing noise. i know this is not normal
it should ring silently.

can anyone please help me with this as i dont want my
house phone ringing constantly

Internal or external modem ??
Do you have a phone plugged into the modem ??

Check the manual and see if you have it hooked up
correctly - your phone shouldn't be ringing at all.

Internal. the cable is plugged into the socket named line.
there is one called phone but if i plug it into that i get
not connected messages.

Just to be sure.

1. First uninstall your modem driver, restart, reinstall but make sure your
reinstall from the CD, restart.
2. Go to "Network and Dial-up Connection" Click your modem connection,
click Properties Button, on the General Tab, check which number your modem
is dialing to. Play with it, change the default number.

Question: Constant ringing noice. You mean incessant ringing tone even
after you're already connected on the internet, or just when it is in the
process of dialing up your ISP?

i dont know, it takes too long to load up so i have to
cancel the connection. the ringing goes on for ages though

Go to the Device Manager and delete the modem. Shut down. Physically remove
the modem. Start the computer, and install the driver that came with the
modem. Shut the computer down. Reinstall the modem. Boot the computer, and
allow Plug and Pray to find it. Choose to use the driver you just installed.
It should work after all of that. OR not, if there is something wrong with
the modem. In that case install another modem.

There could be several possibilites here

1.
You have a large number of redial attempts after a failed connection after
the next. If this is the case, try either dialing with the area code and
without the area code to your ISP. Try changing the number your modem is
calling to connect to your ISP. Uncheck the "Enable Modem Speaker"
checkbox Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications/Network and Dial-up
connections/right click your ISP connection/on the general tab you would see
a "Configure" button/click on that and/ uncheck "Enable Modem Speaker"

2.
The modem driver is corrupted. Try to uninstall restart and then reinstall
from CD (very important)

3.
Your modem in not on the "right" PCI slot. In this case try playing with its
location. I suggest you try PCI slot 5 (the farthest the the processor) to
the first.

4.
Your ISP is alway down thats why you cannot connect

5.
If you have a second phone line, you may have accidentally entered your
second line phone number to your modem dial-up list. That's why you're
"other" phone is ringing.

6.
If you have verified all previous suggestions but still the same case is
happening, it must be a hardware issue. Replace your modem.
