2k XPh + 98se + home lan + wireless router = disaster

Dan

Hi,
I asked about networking my 2k laptop, xp home pc, and 98se pc, and I was
told that I had to make an username and password the same on each. The thing
is though is that this is a HOME NETWORK and none of the computers have
passwords, and the 98se pc doesn't even have a password. As these are family
computers I don't really want to have to password protect all of the
computers. Is there any other way to fix the computers not being able to
access eachothers files?

Here is the original message:
having a few problems with my home network,

I have three computers (at the moment): a Windows 2k laptop, a WinXP home
pc, and a Win98se pc. The two pcs connect to a dg834g (wireless adsl
firewall router) with ethernet cables, and the laptop connects (well should)
to the router through a wireless 801.11b connection using a DrayTek Vigor
520 pcmcia card.

My problem is that the router seems to be working fine, all of the computers
can connect to the net, and the two pcs can see eachother in net
neighbourhood + can share files printers etc. The problem comes when the
laptop is added into the mix.

The laptop cannot see the other computers and the computers can't see it,
however as the laptop is connected to router and can connect to the net, I
would have thought that the computers being able to see eachother would also
work.

I have tried the ping command and these are what I have seen:
PC1 XP
PC2 98se
LP1 2K

PC1 > PC2 Ping OK
PC1 > LP1 Ping OK
PC2 > PC1 Ping OK
PC2 > LP1 Ping OK
LP1 > PC1 Ping NO
LP1 > PC2 Ping OK

I'm not sure why I keep getting these weird results, as I would have thought
that if the laptop can't ping the pc1, pc1 wouldn't be able to ping the
laptop.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get the laptop involved with this network
it would be a great help!

P.S
All of the IP addresses have been designated by dhcp (by the router) : not
sure if this helps!

Any help would be appreciated.

If any given computer has only a user name used to log on, no password;
that's fine, just create an account on the other computers with the same
name but no password.

I've tried that:
My XPhome desktop has 4 accounts, one called DAN.
I made a new username on my 2000 laptop called: DAN.

Still didn't work.

Did the making and using of the same name and password work?
If not you have other problems, if so we can move beyond that to other
solutions. Yes there are ways around that.

I've tried that:
My XPhome desktop has 4 accounts, one called DAN.
I made a new username on my 2000 laptop called: DAN.

Still didn't work.

On your Win2K machine, enable the guest account. Right click my
computer and then select "manage", click the "+" next to Users&Groups,
then click on users. Select Guest and click properties, uncheck
"account is disabled", then okay your way out.

I think you've gotta reboot after that.

This tends to throw the door open on your machine, and folks will tell
you not to do this for that reason. If the machine is going to leave
your house, you may want to disable the guest account.

I've only seen the same account name work between Win2K boxes.
