WinXP Pro SP2 connecting via ICS on a Win2K dialup box which does WU
just fine, running Kerio PF 2.1.4 (it supports ICS, newer versions
don't). AVG Free, AdAware and Spybot S&D all update fine, scans find
nothing wrong, HJT shows nothing out of the ordinary. Turning off KPF on
the W2K box has no effect on this issue. Reset IE to defaults, even
performed a Repair Install on the XP box, updated a/v and asw, scanned
with all, no problems found, no change. Using both my account (admin
equiv.) and Administrator react the same.

I'm usually really good with this sort of thing but this one has got me
stumped. I'm not above a clean re-install of XP on this machine but I
like to figure this sort of stuff out for the sake of knowledge. Any ideas?

TIA,
Steve N.

You might try posting in microsoft.public.windowsupdate and mention the
specific errors you get when you try WU.....good luck.

Steve,

Since you mentioned Kerio, be aware that 1 of last weeks updates "may" adversely affect it. Be sure to read these 2 articles.

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015 (article published 15 Apr 2006)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

In that article, pay close attention to the 2nd bullet about Kerio & the effect of Verclsid.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx which was updated 4-15-2006

As to the "Page cannot be displayed", that is likely a generic screen message. You need to dig into the windows update log file.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and take a look at (usually C:\WINNT or \Windows )
%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Scan down to the bottom. Review contents.
You need to look for entries marked "Error" such as 0x......... (where ....... are numbers)

See KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Thanks LW. Will do, crossposting this reply to
microsoft.public.windowsupdate. The only error is "Page cannot be
displayed." Nothing significant I can see as related in Event Viewer either.

Steve,

See my reply in windowsxp.general & take a good look at the update log file. Post back with the Error number & description, if there.

Thank you for your reply, Maurice. I have not updated KPF, but I will
read all the links you provided.

So far what I've looked at in the WindowsUpdate.log indicate an problem
using a cached cookie; "failed to obtain cached cookie with hr = 80072ee2."

Thanks again,

"You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" or "Error 0x80072EFD" error message when you try to use Windows Update"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

Also, are you running Zone Alarm? If so, add download.windowsupdate.com to the privacy (safe list) in Zone Alarm.

If still no joy, get the "set" of lines for the date at issue, copy, and paste back in a reply.

Tried the solutions there that applied, no go. The network works fine
otherwise and I can get to sites other than MS sites. Added both
www.microsoft.com and download.windowsupdate.com to trusted sites, still
no go.

Nope. Just running the Windows firewall and KPF on the ICS host. The ICS
host has no problem getting to any sites and disabling the KPF on it
makes no difference. Also make no difference if I turn off the Windows
firewall.

Nope. Just running the Windows firewall and KPF on the ICS host. The ICS
host has no problem getting to any sites and disabling the KPF on it
makes no difference. Also make no difference if I turn off the Windows
firewall.

<snip>

Did a clean install on the XP box, made no difference. Only thing I can
think of is it must be something on the ICS host, which is Win2K but I
doubt that matters. I fully updated the ICS host box, made sure it was
malware free (found a few minor things, mostly cookies), even
uninstalled Kerio firewall on it, no change. Again, every site except
microsoft works fine.

If you are still having a problem, and it really is a "time out" problem, then consider the following.
This is a direct quote from Lucy Eby, on a similar problem. 1 part is to look at HOSTS file --
normally it has 1 real active entry - for local host--that's your pc. The last part is to insure
some DLLs for Internet Explorer are in the system registry.

<quote>

1) Check the Hosts file for any Microsoft entries.
Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc
( or C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc

With notepad, open the file called HOSTS
Verify there's not Microsoft or Windows Update entries.
If so please remove the entries and save the file.
Save changes close all windows
Try Windows Update again.

2) Check your firewall settings/options if it is a 3rd-part product.

Also try registering Internet Explorer files:

1. Click the start menu and select Run.
2. Type "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" (without the quotes) Press enter

3. Then type "regsvr32 mshtml.dll" (without the quotes) Press enter

4. Then type "regsvr32 msjava.dll" (without the quotes) Press enter

5. Then type "regsvr32 jscript.dll" (without the quotes) Press enter

6. Then type "regsvr32 msxml.dll" (without the quotes) Press enter

7. Then type "regsvr32 shdocvw.dll" (without the quotes) Press enter

8. Then type "regsvr32 actxprxy.dll (without the quotes) Press enter

9. Then type "regsvr32 urlmon.dll (without the quotes) Press enter

Retry Windows Update.

I will try your suggestions if need be but first I am going to replace
my 10mb hub with a 100mb switch tonite and see the results because I now
also cannot update AVG Free and am now also having some other sites time
out on me, and I now do recall an alert that the network was not
connecting a while back, so I am suspicious that the hub is flaking out
on me. Hope it's that simple. I'll post back with results.

Thanks again for your help.

Replaced above mentioned, no change except AVG Free did update once but
not subsequently. See next post for the other things.

Thanks again,

Did a file search for it, does not exist on this box. I suspect this is

Still no go. Also AVG Free updates also now fail (that only worked once,
BTW). Still can get to other non-MS websites. Thinking about flattening
and installing Win2K on this box (seriously!).

Thanks for your help and if you have any other ideas I'm reading.

Windows update had a problem for the past two days. I tried it on
Wednesday night and my system (XP Pro) failed to update. I tried again
yesterday an it failed for about 3 hours but it was successful
eventually!!.

I had to update my system because I was changing my ISP and I expected a
short blip before the changeover.

It is ok now but I am also with a new ISP.

Thanks for the input. I have also seen some problems with WU on other
machines the last week, but usually due to various malware, which does
not exist on this box. Perhaps that may be part of the problem, however
it does not explain why this box cannot even load _any_ MS sites when
the ICS host box (Win2K) it connects through loads them all flawlessly.

Is the Microsoft site blocked in HOSTS file? It is a good idea to check
this. The file is normally located in:

In Windows 2K:
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

Double click on the file and open in Notepad. If it is a very big file
then do a search for microsoft.com to see if there is anything.

No. It seems to be a java dll is missing. If you read through the thread
I have done all that Maurice suggested.

Thanks

Intalled Firefox, turned off KPF on ICS host, turned off WFW on the XP
box, now even FF can't get to _any_ MS sites, so it's not an IE issue
that I can tell. The msjava.dll missing has me puzzled, I did SFC/
Scannow and it found nothing missing or corrupt.

Repeat, this is fresh and clean install of XP Pro SP2, verified spyware
and virus free, hosts file clean, etcX3, blahX3, so please nobody repeat
suggestions already given & tired (please read the thread), I won't
reply to them. Why is msjava.dll missing on a clean install of XP Pro
SP2? This just ain't right. Network components ( ethernet switch and NIC
) changed and verified working absolutley fine in all other respects.
WTF is up with this?

My frustration is beginning to outweigh my curiosity at this point. I
already asked for a reliable source to obtain msjava.dll, no answer to
that yet and I'm tired of searching and getting hits from sites I may
not trust. Before I nuke and install another OS somebody please pipe up.
Someone else has GOT to have run into this crap before.

XP is great when it works. Blows goats when it doesn't.

Thanks,
Steve N.

Following is only a basic first-pass checklist of settings for Internet Explorer browser, tailored for smoother entry into Windows Update.
It is NOT a cure-all !

Make sure this is not running a 3rd-part Popup-Ad remover, or any anonymizer.

1. In Internet Explorer browser > select Tools, click Internet Options, and then click
Languages....
If this box is empty, add at least one language -- your usual national
language.
If you happen to have 2 or more, move English up on this list.

2. Disengage your Discussion Bar in Internet Explorer: Click View on
main IE menu.
Point to Explorer Bar.
If "Discuss" has a check mark, click Discuss to *remove the check mark*
and clear it.
You may note, if the discussion bar is active, it would appear near the
bottom of IE window.

3. I. E. Tools >Internet Options > Advanced Tab > (scroll down thru
the list)

These are "some" of the items that I do have CHECKed (selected):
Under HTTP 1.1 settings --
Use HTTP 1.1 (ON / Selected)
+ Enable / check to use HTTP 1.1 with proxy servers **** <<----

and under Security :

Clear (un-check) the check box next to "Check for server certificate
revocation" . ( *OFF* )

Use SSL 2.0 (ON / selected)
Use SSL 3.0 (ON)

4. Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections Tab Click
on LAN Settings > * Uncheck* the Automatically detect settings.
Make sure _no other_ settings on this screen are enabled.

5. Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Look very closely at line that says:

"Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" to
*clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to
list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://update.microsoft.com

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Click OK. Apply changes to IE browser.
