Windows Update

gram pappy

I am on XP PRO SP3, IE 7
No problem with Windows Update until this month.

When I Ck on link now the WU page opens and after scan the
Welcome box comes up, then "New! Get Microsoft Update today"
appears and am locked out of WU.

Are they doing away with WU or do I have some kind of glitch?

So? Install it. No big deal.
It will also check if any other Microsoft software needs updates too. ie: MS Office, etc.

So you're seeing this ? Or something else ?

Your statement "am locked out of WU", what does that mean exactly ?
The buttons aren't there, or nothing happens ?

Windows Update *is* still there, because I just used it (by clicking
the Custom button), and it had two .NET security updates for me.

When I Ck

Ck = click?
on link now

Is that ", now" or "now,"?
the WU page opens and after scan the Welcome box comes up, then "New!
Get Microsoft Update today" appears and am locked out of WU.

You actually get a page or popup that says "locked out"? Just WHAT is
it that tells you that you are "locked out"? What does "locked out"
mean?

Set focus to the window with the "lock out" error, capture it
(Alt+Print) to the clipboard, use Paint to save it into a file, and then
upload the image file to Imageshack or another online file/photo service
and give us a link to the file so we can see what you are trying to
describe.

If it's telling you that Microsoft requires you to update to their
latest WU control then your choice is to:

- Install it to get updates.
- Don't install it and secede from getting updates.
Are they doing away with WU or do I have some kind of glitch?

If the WU site went away, how did you get there?

So far, and only guessing based on a poor description, it looks like the
"glitch" is you not accepting to install Microsoft's latest WU control.
That's just a guess until "locked out" gets defined so others know what
you mean.

By the way, for you to install software requires that you be currently
logged under an admin-level account. Maybe what you mean by "locked
out" is that you try to install the new WU control but get told you
don't have permissions to install the software.

Get Microsoft Update by hitting the Go button. Windows Update is being phased out
slowly. Nothing wrong ,just hit the Go button and Microsoft Update will install.
Same as Windows Update but you have the Office Updates added.

Ok will do, I kind of expected that.
I have held off on going to Microsoft Update as I don't have Office and
did not want the extra bloat on this old PC...

Thanks, gram

You might also want to flush your web browser's TIF (temporary internet
files) folder along with loading IE in its no add-ons mode (to ensure
they aren't causing problems with the WU site). If you are using some
pre-compiled 'hosts' file to block ad content at sites, temporarily
rename it before visiting WU. Also temporarily disable all security
software (anti-virus, 3rd party firewall, HIPS, web scanners, etc).
