Minor Rant: Windows Update keeps fscking with me

S

Steve N.

Good Lord!

I have turned off Windows Update but the damn thing keeps trying to
connect. I've monitored it with Kerio PF & Ethereal and it keeps yakking
with some POS windows update site or three. I'm on dialup so bandwidth
consumption is a major concern to me.

This is MY freaking computer, *I* am paying hard earned good money for
MY internet access, and I don't appreciate XP playing these stupid ass
games with my connection. What's up with this sh!t?

I sure liked Win2K a hell of a lot better.

SuSE is looking better all the time, too.

Ngah!

Thanks for putting up with my mini-rant here.

Peace!

Start | Run <type in> services.msc <enter>
stop, then disable Automatic Updates

Thanks for that PW. Did it. Didn't make any difference even after a restart.

Here's a 2 minute capture record from Ethereal after a restart and
dialing up (edited out some gobble-T-gook):

I don't want it to "Keep-Alive", I want it to "Keep-Dead"!
I Don't need MS to try and patch my OS unless I say it's ok. Period.

Yes, I looked up kb908531. I don't need or want it. My dialup connection
is constantly busy with this horsecrap going on.

One more thing is to view your taskmanager and see if a process name'd
wuauclt.exe is running if so kill the process and rename the file...
http://www.processid.com/wuauclt.exe.html

If even that doesn't work put: au.download.windowsupdate.com in your
HOSTS file. you'll never connect then.

Wuauclt.exe not running but after yet another restart the unwanted
activity has stopped.

Thanks for your help.
