windows update prompts me to use old dialup connection

I used to connect to the internet on a dialup connection,
now I use cable and have for a few years.

Sometimes, windows auto update tells me that I'm offline
(although I'm constantly connected via cable) and
prompts me to connect using an old dialup connection.

How can I stop this? I don't want to delete the
dialup connect settings so I can get online that way
in case my cable connection goes down.

Thanks.

You still have a dial-up connectoid defined (see the Network Connections
applet in Control Panel). That you still have it defined doesn't mean
it is usable. Are you really paying monthly for dial-up service while
you are also paying monthly for broadband (cable/DSL) service? If you
don't have a dial-up service provider, there's no point in keeping
defined the dial-up connectoid.

If you are maintaining a dial-up service provider and want to keep the
dial-up connectoid for backup [slow] Internet access, make sure you
haven't configured it as the default connection. Go to Internet Options
-> Connections tab, select the connection you want as the default, and
then click the "Set default" button to make that your default Internet
connection mode. Also select the "Never dial a connection" option to
make sure your dial-up connectoid doesn't get used; however, that means
when the LAN connection isn't working that you'll have to manually
initiate a connection using the dial-up connectoid.

Thanks for your help. I think I've things configured correctly now.

I don't use the dialup connection to connect to the net but still
use that email address and the ISP's webspace, so it's not a total waste
of money.
