Transferring to a new computer

I've gotten into the habit of using my laptop and haven't touched my desktop
in months. They both have XP. What I want to do is transfer (copy) all the
folders and files on the laptop to the desktop. I realize that some of the
programs that are only on the laptop will have to be handled individually

Some time back it was really complicated to transfer data to a new computer.
I'd like to know what is now the best way to do what I want.
