Transferring Licenses

Due to a recent laptop crash I have a new laptop. I would like to transfer
my full XP Professional O/S (full license-not OEM) and XP Office software
from the dead PC to the new PC.

How do I do this (I have all original Install disks). I would think someone
needs to transfer the license.

Also... any suggestions on how to move it painlessly (without losing any
drivers on the new hardware) would be appreciated.

No need to transfer licenses, you just install on the new computer and
activate. If they're retail licenses, you're fine.

You don't move programs, you reinstall them.

I'm not sure what you mean about losing drivers, though. Want to clarify
that?

There is no "de-activation" process, as such.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on and then
install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120 days since
you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most likely be
able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less,
you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Insert the WinXP Pro installation CD and, when prompted, select the
Upgrade (Recommended) option. Have the new computer's driver CD(s)
available, just in case, though.

Thanks everyone... I thought it was more complicated than that. The last
time I did a complete re-install so reloading drivers was not a lot of fun,
but upgrade sounds easier ;-)

One last question.

When I insert my retail XP professional disk (a few years old now) I am
warned that the current version installed (an OEM home version which came on
the new machine) is more up-to-date than the XP professional disk I've put in
the drive. Am I asking for trouble upgrading with this disk?

Thanks!

Actually I think your website helped answer my second question. I'm going
to try the "slipstreamed" CD creation to update to XP Pro.

Thanks for the advice!

Do you have Service Pack 2 installed? If so, it's file versions
_are_ newer than the files on the WinXP Pro Upgrade CD. You'll need
to uninstall the SP2 to perform the upgrade.
