Transferring Data

I had a Dell Inspirion laptop and the motherboard shorted out so it is dead
and won't power on. Now i need to transfer my data that was on the hard
drive to my new Toshiba laptop that i recently purchased. I am aware that I
can get a laptop to IDE converter so that i can transfer the data from my
old laptop's hard drive to a pc but wondering if there is a way to just do a
transfer from the old hard drive to my new laptop's hard drive without going
through transferring it to a pc first.

Here are a couple of methods:

a) Use the IDE converter you mention. It's cheap but it requires
a double transfer. There is also a danger of frying the disk if you
connect the adapter back to front (which is very easy to do).

b) Buy an external USB case for a 2.5" disk. They cost very
little. You could then connect the old disk to your new laptop
and transfer the data. Even better, your old disk would make
an excellent medium for your weekly backups.
