I'm thinking of hooking up the win 98 laptop to my desktop win xp home.
I can't seem to load some software for an Ipod Mini onto the desktop since
I'm having some trouble with my CD-RW drive.

I haven't tried yet but my thoughts are to load this software onto
the laptop
then transfer the file or files from the laptop to the desktop via a direct
cable connection.
I've poked around in "help and support" both on the laptop and the desktop.
Connecting
them seems pretty straight forward. Staples has a parallel cable for short
money that is made
by Belkin that's supposed to transfer files from one computer to another.
Any tips or tricks that would make this procedure really easy?

Or if both your machine has LAN cards installed, just use an ethernet cable
to set up a direct connection to transfer files.

Or you might want to downlaod the software off the internet directly to your
desktop.

Wouldn't a replacement CD-RW drive be a better long term option... not much
more money than the cable...?

Sorry. No lan card in the desktop. D'loading the needed file is not
the best option since it's about 30MB and I've got dialup. Yikes!
Eventually CD drive will probably need to be replaced but not sure
it's the drive as opposed to a messed up registry. Been trying to get it
going for couple of months now. Sometimes it's recognized by windows
sometimes not.
Thanks anyway.

Getting a direct parallel connection to work can be hard, and the data
transfer is very slow. This web site has instructions:

DirectParallel® and Direct Cable Connection (DCC) Step-by-Step SETUP
http://www.lpt.com/Support/DCC-SetUp/dcc-setup.htm

An Ethernet connection is much easier to set up and use. If your
laptop doesn't have an Ethernet adapter, you could get a PC Card
Ethernet adapter like the D-Link DFE-690TXD.

However, the easiest way to move files from one computer to the other
might not be to network the computers at all. Get a USB thumb drive,
write the files to it, and move them to the other computer. Be sure
that the manufacturer provides Windows 98 drivers for the device.
They're usually available on the manufacturer's web site.

Thanks. Have been to Parallel Technologies website already. Thought of a USB
drive (always wanted one anyway). W.as aware that most drives sold now don't
provide drivers for win 98.
Transfer rate isn't too important. It's got to be better than 30MB on
dialup!!
