missing or corrupt pci.sys

Windows XP SP1
NTFS
desktop, clone, amd duron 700; 768 MB ram; 20 GB free.
The PC had been working well for over a year.
Out of the blue, today, the PC hung as the desktop loaded,
so I rebooted. Checkdisk ran, reporting many problems.
The system then spontanteously rebooted and stopped after
the post, informing me:
windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt
system32\drivers\pci.sys

you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows
setup using the using the original setup cd-rom

select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

I have searched google & yahoo.
My plan is to rename c:\windows\system32\drivers\pci.sys
to pci.old , then extract [ expand ] a new copy of
pci.sys from i386.

I am having trouble with the ren / rename command.
I have used c:\ren /? , but I don't understand. I'm told
that "rename will operate only in the system directories
of the current installation.
From c:\> , I type:
ren c:\windows\system32\drivers pci.sys pci.old , Returned
is "the name specified is not a directory", or "the
parameter is not valid".

I've tried to rename from c:\windows &
c:\windows\system32 , but the error messages continue.

Your assistance is appreciated.

I would try chkdsk c: /r especially if it's an NTFS partition.
before renaming files.

Use the CD command. For example:
CD "\windows\system32"
REN abc.sys abc.old

I couldn't get to windows to run chkdsk. I slaved the
hard drive into another XP Pro machine, couldn't run
chkdsk "access denied". No mention of scheduling chkdsk
for next boot. But I re-booted & chkdsk ran.

Norton Ghost failed.

Screw it, I thought.
I tried to repair the installation, but files cold no be
copied to the hard drive.

Screw it. The hard drive is now a door stop.

I'd still like some information about the process involved
in the file renaming process.

Sorry you lost you're disk.
What do you want to know about renaming files.
Those are just the old DOS commands popular about
10 years ago!
CD - change directory.

you just had your command line a bit off

ren c:\windows\system32\drivers\pci.sys c:\windows\system32\drivers\pci.old

or

cd\windows\system32\drivers
ren pci.sys pci.old

need full path unless you are in the current folder
