pci.sys

A

An Kur

While loading xp home on a Toshiba Satellite laptop I get
this error.
-------------
Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:
System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows
Setup using the original setup CDROM.

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
-------------

While loading the CDROM and booting from it gives an option
to make a clean install - it does does not allow to replace
the pci.sys file...I have to wipe clean the hard disk
rather than replacing only that file.

It says 'this process will restore the original default
system instal or your hard drive'.

What is the way out? I have downloaded a clean pci.sys
which if replaced might do the trick - how can I access the
harddisk and copy that file over?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Start/run msconfig, click on "expand file" (general tab)

File to expand: pci.sys
From: X:\I386
To: C:\Windows\system32

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive (you need your WinXP CD
for this), change it accordingly. If your system was preinstalled, you may
find this instead on the hard drive under C:\Windows\I386. If so, change the
"from" line accordingly. Reboot when finished.
