If you uninstall IE8, your previous version of IE will reappear.
Follow these instructions:

I also just installed IE8 through an automatic upgrade and am VERY frustrated
that I can no longer open attachments. I am not very technical, am having
trouble following this stream of suggestions. Is the easiest way just to
uninstall IE8? I dont care about having that updated version of IE, not sure
why it was downloaded to me. How would I uninstall IE8, and what are the
ramifications of doing that, will my previous version of IE remain? I
purchased this new laptop in April '09, my IE version can't be that far
behind.

Here is the link to uninstall IE8. When done, the system will revert itself
back to IE7. You don't have to do a thing.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700
You have set your machine automatically download and install new updates,
which is why you have IE8 installed.
Set your machine to notify you of new updates, but let you decide if you
want them installed or not.
Here is how :
Start button > Control Panel > Classic View > Windows Updates > Left
column, click Change Settings > click " check for updates but let me choose
whether to download and install them " > OK

Gary, thank you for your help. I followed your instructions - changed my
settings so that I review update requests prior to installing them, and
uninstalled IE8, and it reverted back to my previous IE7 version and
settings. Thanks again for your speedy and very helpful feedback. Have a
nice evening

That was an interesting comment from Microsoft tech support.

Sounds really strange to me.
If they know which file is corrupted, they should be able to release a
patch that corrects whatever is corrupted. Asking the user to go all
the way back to IE6 is not reasonable.

How might that be done under Vista?
So far I thought that IE7 was an integral part of Vista and can not be
uninstalled.
Would be this a wring assumption?

And where might I get IE6?
I don't think that I will still find a CD with this really old stuff.

Any ideas?

Thanks for this most interesting report!
You can generally open attachments if you save them to another folder
in documents for example. This works most of the time but not always.

I'm having the IE8-WinMail on all of my four computers.
No problem, however, with saving and the opening the attachments.
AFAICS a problem with opening a saved attachment might only appear if
there would be a problem with file associations.
I spoke to Microsift tech help about this and was told that the
problem was caused by a corrupted IE7 file. They siad the ony way to
solve it was to delete IE8 and 7 then reinstall a pure version of IE7
and then upgrade to IE8.

Most interesting! Or better say: Really Strange.
Corrupted IE7 (which was working without any problem) would cause a
problem under IE8??

Just curious: Did the support person know about the problem before?
Did he/she check some internal databases?
Did he/she point to any KB articles?
I felt this was to time consuming so I just live with the problem and
save the attachments.

I would try out that way would I know how to remove IE7.

Apart: You know that the problem can dramatically be reduced by editing
the shortcut used for launching WinMail?
In case not, pls see below.

I believe IE 7 is packaged with Vista. I upgraded from IE7 to IE 8 and that
is when I started experiencing the problem. Microsoft Tech told me to revert
back to IE7, install a pure version and then upgrade to IE8 and that should
solve the probelm. I am not convinced they really knew what the problem was
but they were going to take remote control of my computer and do it
themselves. I decided I had enough problems and was not convinced they were
going to solve this one. I can live with the extra effort to open mail
attachments.

What might "install a pure version" mean?
Downloading IE7 and trying to install it - without having the removed
the "corrupt" thing??
and then
upgrade to IE8 and that should solve the probelm. I am not convinced
they really knew what the problem was but they were going to take
remote control of my computer and do it themselves.

Did they acknowledge that the problem exists?
I decided I had
enough problems and was not convinced they were going to solve this
one. I can live with the extra effort to open mail attachments.

The more as only JPG and TXT attachment need this procedure, the rest
will open fine when the workaround has been applied.

Thanks for the follow-up

This works! It's a pain but it has stopped me removing 8 to reinstall 7 which
would have been a greater pain. Let's hope MS pulls it's finger out and kills
the bug, but SOON please.

I also installed OE8 & can no longer open attachments. HP suggested that I
reinstall Windows Mail; I tried it...doesn't work. WHAT CAN BE DONE? As an
alternative, I'm saving mail with attachments to Documents, and opening
there. I want solution!

Following onto my earlier email. Having run mail from IE8 a couple of times
I reverted to habit and clicked the Winmail icon and, magic, everything now
works as it should! All attachments I tried (jpg, txt & doc) downloaded
perfectly. So I did a restart and lo and behold everything still works
properly. Fingers crossed.

I'm pretty sure that the problem will return with JPG and TXT
attachments.

I have had the same problem. Vista, IE8 and MSN, unable to open attachments.
I talked to MSN Support Team today and was advised Microsoft was aware of
the problem and are working on a fix. No indication regarding how long it
will take.

Thanks for that report. Apparently MSN Explorer 9.6 is also affected
by the failure to open attachments after IE8 is installed.

After giving up for a while I am once again attempting to open WinMail e-mail
attachments. What I did today was uninstall IE8 (thanks for the procedure).
Once this completed, the machine rebooted to save changes. I then opend IE
and clicked "help" to check the verion (7). So far so good. Then I went back
to WinMail and tried opening an attachment. Still unable to open a .jpeg,
..doc, .pdf, etc. Right click, save to funtion doesn't work either.

Any help is appreciated.
