Yes, apparently Vista is one of the necessary ingredients for the problem to occur.

I right cliced to save, and placed in 'DOCUMENTS" then retrieved it and
opened it. Worked for me!

Yes, that's a known workaround, but often not as convenient as opening
the attachment directly inside Windows Mail.

Yes, this always works. But it does not solve the problem. Just a
workaround not being too comfortable.

Don't tell my wife, but I think I'm in love with you. That worked!

Do you think MS will issue a patch to permanently fix this?

Thanks again.

So far there is no fix as no one really knows what might be going in.

The only way to cure the problem is to uninstall IE8.
And there is a workaround reducing the problems to JPG and TXT files:

Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail. Select
Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

Rainald:

Thanks for all your help.

About 10 days ago "Dave" made the same suggested workaround suggestion. I
did delete what was in "Srart In" and it seemed to work for saving my photos.
BUT now I can neither send or receive e-mails. So...I thought the answer must
be to reinsert "UserProfile%' in "Start in." BUT I can only get to after the
"e" in "None" in "Shortcut Key" in "Properties"- and can't move my cursor off
that to the "Start In" box to re-type the aformentioned reinsertion. Any
ideas how to fix this?

Thanks,

From all we heard so far there is no problem with *saving* attachments.
It's just opening attachments from WinMail directly.
BUT now I can neither send or receive e-mails.

This very strange. It must be a different issue.

It should be %UserProfile% (with a leading "%" key and one at the end.

Very strange.
I would suggest to delete the shortcut and try to launch WinMail from
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\

Thereafter you can create a new shortcut.

This sounds ridiculous but if I use Windows Mail from my Start Menu, my
attachments will not open. If I open Windows Mail from the shortcut on my
desktop, the attachments open perfectly. If one method doesn't work, try the
other.

Try switching from your Start menu (Windows Mail) to your shortcut on your
desktop (or vice-versa). Sounds ridiculous but I can open attachments if I
open Windows Mail from my desktop but CAN'T open them if I use my Windows
Mail from the Start-up Menu. This is a new problem for me, but if I use my
desktop shortcut, i can open all attachments.

This will only solve the problem *partially*!

It may *SOUND* ridiculous, but it is anything but that:
Obviously you have *different* shortcuts for launching WinMail (a) in
your desktop and (b) in the Start-up menu.

Besides other - still mysterious - conditions, one of the factors
relevant for the "IE8-WinMail-bug" is the location for storing the
temporary files needed for opening the attachments.

I'd bet that there are different settings in your shortcuts on the
desktop on the one side and in the Start-up menu OTH.
Pls check the properties of both shortcuts and look for the entries in
the field "Start in:"; then report back what you have there.

In addition:
Pls test things with JPG- and TXT-attachments (you may send a mail to
yourself with both types of files).
Wait a while and test again and again. Use IE for surfing in between.
I'm rather sure that even with the destination %UserProfile% or %Temp%
in the field "Start in:" sooner or later trying to open JPG and/or TXT
attachments will lead to error messages telling that the file could not
be found.

Thanks for your co-operation

How about JPG- and/or TXT-attachments??

Pls see my parallel posting.

Well, I did use the proper "%" prefix, and I did try deleting the Shortcut
and starting WinMail over. Same result- stuck after "None." Maybe I'm just
unsure on how to start over at "C:\Program Files..."

You were also correct re all your surmises about what I was doing re Photo
Gallery: I did mean "Open" and I did try mthe lower right hand corner. At
this point it's probably the photo itself that can't be edited.

But, that issue is moot for me presently as I'm just trying to undo David's
5/20 fix, so I can at least send/receive e-mails- and am getting nowhere.

Thanks again.

I doubt that David's fix has anything to do with your sending and receiving
failure. But just to be on the safe side, create a new shortcut.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe, right-click
on that file, select "Create Shortcut".

Do you get an error message when you try to send or receive? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Sorry, I can not understand what you did and what not :-( :-(

Did you only *TRY* to delete the shortcut and the thing could not be
deleted?
Or did you delete it?

And: Did you create a new shortcut as I had suggested and (Gary too)?

What happens when you click on the C:\Program Files\Windows
Mail\Winmail.exe?

As said before I'm sure that your problem is not related to Dave's
"fix".

Again, thanks for helping a neophyte like me.

Yes, I did delete the entire "Start In" Shortcut. I took David's option to
do that vs his other suggestion of deleting what was already in "Start" down
to the "%User...". I also deleted the Shortcut and rcreated a new one- and
still couldn't get off being stuck after "None".

I not sure how to get to the "C:\Program...."

Thanks.

With the help of my daughter in law, I went to Control Panel, Uninstall
Programs, then in the left column at the top select "view installed updates"
I scrolled down & removed IE8 and restarted my PC and evertything is OK.

I also removed the Norton Anti-Virus that came with the PC (it has expired
June 1st) to make sure that wasn't also contributing to the problem. And I
also went to my "security" settings under windows mail, options to make sure
box #2 was unchecked.

This worked for me. Hope this helps

Mike
