If I go ahead with the IE8 deletion how do I get a browser loaded back onto
the machine?

A right click on the paperclip will not allow me to save it either. I
tried to save to documents and desktop but the file does not appear.

As said before: Really strange.
I've been through each and any of the reports on the attachment problem,
but I do not recall that anyone reported a problem with *saving* an
attachment.

And no error messages at all??
What I meant by quite a few fixes should have been phrased quite a
few work arounds that have worked for other folks, not for me though.

Oh, I see.
None of the posted recipes does cure the problem.
Whatever people have done, the bug came crawling back sooner or later.

As said the only workaround that reliably works is manipulating the
entry in the "Start in:" field of the shortcut used for launching
WinMail. But it leaves JPG and TXT attachments behind.

No click and save function works.

Can you click File, Save Attachments?

So far the finest minds haven't figured out the exact reason why IE8
sometimes has this attachments issue, so don't feel bad.

I guess I don't understadn how that works. I am used to Uninstalling a
program which completely removes it. Are you suggesting this or Start, All
Programs right click Internet Explorer then delete?

Seems I would have to load version 7 before deletion???

thanks,
bruce

If you uninstall IE8[1] the previous browser IE8 will automatically be
back..

After you've un-installed IE8, it will revert back to IE7 automatically.

I did it this way. But I suggest to read the said KB article first.

No.
IE7 is still in the system (unless you made serious mistake after
installing IE8) . And - as said - it will automatically be active once
IE8 is removed.

Thanks for confirming that. It will help us give good advice to others
with the same problem.

Just got a new computer, with all these wonderful upgrades, including IE8 and
Vista. Anyways, I was having the same problem with pdf files. I tried your
recipe of resending the shortcut and . . . it Works! Thanks :)

When you uninstall IE8 you'll automagically get IE7 back.

I,too, have a "the command failed to execute" message every time I try to
open an attachment. I recently installed Adobe 9..could that be the problem?

No, I don't think so.
If it was only a problem with PDFs this could easily be fixed by running
"Repair" for the Adobe Reader - either from "Help" in the menu or from
the lost if installed software.

It rather seems to be the "known" problem which affects many system
(though not the majority) after installing IE8.

There is no fix - except uninstalling IE8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

The problems can be reduced to JPG and TXT files (all other files types
opening fine) with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties.
In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%.
Click OK.
Restart Windows Mail and try opening attachments.

You can generally open attachments if you save them to another folder in
documents for example. This works most of the time but not always. I spoke to
Microsift tech help about this and was told that the problem was caused by a
corrupted IE7 file. They siad the ony way to solve it was to delete IE8 and 7
then reinstall a pure version of IE7 and then upgrade to IE8. I felt this was
to time consuming so I just live with the problem and save the attachments.

That was an interesting comment from Microsoft tech support.
If they know which file is corrupted, they should be able to release a
patch that corrects whatever is corrupted. Asking the user to go all the
way back to IE6 is not reasonable.

I also just installed IE8 through an automatic upgrade and am VERY frustrated
that I can no longer open attachments. I am not very technical, am having
trouble following this stream of suggestions. Is the easiest way just to
uninstall IE8? I dont care about having that updated version of IE, not sure
why it was downloaded to me. How would I uninstall IE8, and what are the
ramifications of doing that, will my previous version of IE remain? I
purchased this new laptop in April '09, my IE version can't be that far
behind.
