I followed your path to command prompt adn selected run as administrator and

I'm going to leave this to Frank or DGuess to answer, as I personally
feel that the corrective action is too complex, especially for someone
who is not skilled with using the Command Prompt or Windows Explorer.
Hopefully someone will write a utility program to automate this process.

Hi,

I used your instructions and the database repair ran correctly.
But the faulty email is still there stuck in my outbox.
What next?

The only alternative is to wipe out the message store. You can do a total
wipeout by moving everything under the Windows Mail directory to another
directory and then it will start fresh. Alternatively, you can delete the
WindowsMail.MSMessageStore file in the Windows Mail directory and the backup
of it in the Windows Mail\backup\new directory. Then the database will be
completely wiped, but your accounts should still be there and the messages
will automatically be recovered.

If you do the first option, you'll either have to import or drag and drop
the individual messages to reincorporate them.

Steve, if I read you correctly, I can take that second option, and I
won't have to manually move my saved messages? If so, that is a
big time saver.

That is correct unless it messes up some more. I deliberately screwed up
some stuff and you can get to the point where the only option is to wipe
everything, but that is not normally needed. I did lots of tests while I
was working on my WMIDs program, as that let me set up several message
stores and I could then obliterate various things to see what happened.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to reproduce the outbox message problem
people are having.

Correct unless it messes up some more? WHat the heck kind of answer is that?
I should have known better than to buy a computer before microsoft fixed
some of the most common errors.

There are lots of answers already and I don't know which you've tried, so
I'll start at the simplest.

Make sure the messages are marked as read and then try to delete them. This
has worked for me.

If that doesn't do it, Steve has posted in this thread:
Close WinMail.
Right click the Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.
Then type this line
esentutil /p "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Mail\windowsmail.msmessagestore"
This sometimes fixes it.

The final resort I have used is to delete windowsmail.msmessagestore in the
above folder AND the one in the Backup folder while WinMail is closed. With
my setup I get some duplicate mail because I leave a copy on the server for
5 days and I think I lose information about which news messages have been
read. I really hope to learn more about this in Redmond next week, but I
won't be home until early the following week.

Whilst I understand all bugs can't be found and fixed before software goes to
market...Some please tell me (and everyone) that Microsoft is going to
release an update that will fix this annoying problem?

I must not have something turned off as far as it automatically backing up my
emails. I followed the instructions to Jan's link, and it is very
simple....however, when I restart Windows Mail, it says that it is restoring
Windows Mail and all of the emails I deleted are right back in there.

I tried disabling System Restore, but I get the same result. Any ideas?

Nevermind, I had to empty out the Windows Mail/ Backup folder, and then it
worked fine.

Thanks Jan for the link!

My rogue email went straight to junk. Having read the email below
(thankfully so so simple and straightforward) I right clicked to mark as
read. Right clicking the individual email to delete produced the same error
message wouldn't work BUT right clicking on junk folder to empty did work.

Bingo! And thanks.

By looking through the messages, I can see this problem has been identified
for probably a year, and no one has figured it out. What is the problem with
MS? They must be aware by now they have a bug (which is not resolved by any
of the MVP suggestions so far....).... When do they get around to fixing it?
How do we report "bugs" ?

You're right. The problem is well-known, the cause is not.
Hopefully Microsoft will release a patch soon, but I'm
not holding my breath.

I think part of the cause was my windows mail crashed when it was downloading
my mail. I was asked to debug and I did, them I closed the debugger and
windows mail closed. When I re-opened it, I have a mail that cant be
displayed nor deleted in the inbox. I took a screen shot of the error.
