I have a message in my inbox that comes up with 'message can not be
displayed' so I want to delete it from my inbox, but then I get that 'an
unknown error has ocurred' when I try to delete it. How can I get rid of
this message?

"get.live.com" won't install. It says to try later?? I gather from other
emails that it is supposed to copy your address book and emails when you
install it. Is this correct? I presume then you would uninstall Windows
Mail.

Thanks for the help.

You may want to try the direct download site:
http://g.live.com/1rebeta/WLM_en-us

WLM automatically copies all your WM accounts, settings,
and saved emails. It doesn't always get the contacts, but
there is a contacts import function you can use. If you
use the option to sign in to a Hotmail account, it will copy
your Hotmail contacts and keep those synchronized.

You cannot uninstall WM, it is part of the Vista OS.

The best thing to do is ignore them.

If you are not willing to just ignore them, the only way is to delete both
copies of the database (which does not contain the messages, but only
references to them) and let WinMail rebuild it.
First close WinMail, then use Task Manager to make sure there are no
instances of it under applications or processes.
Then click Start | Search | Advanced Search
Check the box to include non-indexed, hidden and system files.
In the Name field type WindowsMail.MSMessageStore and click the Search
button.
It should show you two copies. Delete both of them and re-open WinMail.
WinMail will work in the background and recover all of the messages that are
really there.

Although some people have said they lost all messages doing this, WinMail
should recover them in the Recovered Messages folders.

Frank - I tried your solution and I always get an error "The action cannot be
completed because the file is open in another program". MS Mail is closed
and I do not know what to do next.

My message is stuck in the outbox with an error "the message could not be
displayed"

mine also says, windows encountered an unexpected program while displaying
this message. I can't delete them from my deleted file.

This usually means you need to download and install this fix, with Windows
Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common
antivirus programs, such as most of the versions from Norton or
McAfee, tend to cause such problems, although seldom immediately,
so if you have such a program, remember where to find the fix - you
are likely to need it again.
