Dallas, assuming you don't have any malware (this is always a
possibility, even if remote), I am leaning toward a third-party program
(including a browser toolbar) interfering. But for now, one more time,
drill down to these settings:

Tools | Internet Options | Security | Custom Level | Scripting

There should be five items:

1. Active Scripting
2. Allow Programmatic clipboard access
3. Allow status bar updates via script
4. Allow websites to prompt for information using scripted windows
5. Scripting of Java applets

What are the settings for each?

Did you ever try running IE in No Add-ons mode?

D

Dallas

daave, thanks very much, not only for the info. but for your patience &
hanging in here.

as far as the settings, here ya go:
1. Active Scripting - enable 2. Allow Programmatic clipboard access -
enable
3. Allow status bar updates via script - enable
4. Allow websites to prompt for information using scripted windows -
enable
5. Scripting of Java applets - enable

no, i have not tried the add on mode. will wait until you check out the
above.

again, many thanks

Sorry, I'm just about out of ideas. Perhaps they are having intermittent
problems with their Web site. When I clicked on the link you posted
(with IE7), I got the correct screen. But that's not to say there aren't
other problems on their end. I really think it's them and not you. Good
luck! (At least, you can get there with Opera...)

Still, you may want to try IE in the No Add-Ons mode, just for good
measure. Finally, you could try a Clean Boot:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

(which, of course, can and should be reversed)

If you still can't get through with IE, I have absolutely no idea why
that would be!

What did the bank say when you told them that?

vanguard, you still around ?

Yep. I didn't bother following the other subthreads because your visit
to the webkit site's javascript test page showed that you DO have
Javascript enabled in your web browser. However, your performance
results are extremely poor so you need to find out what is causing the
slowdown. I don't remember if you tried using IE in its no add-ons
mode. If not, try the javascript test page again to see if the results
speed up.

thanks twayne & he said he thinks I don't have java installed so he sent me
here:

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp?locale=en&host=www.java.com#win

I see Java (TM)6 Update 4 & 5 in Add/ Remove.

once on that java page, it says :
"Verifying Java Version
Oops! You don't have the Java installed or you have a version less than
1.4.2"

but when I click on the D/L Java, it only has 2 windows options, both for
xpvista, none for xphome.

so am confused more than ever now

thanks twayne

I am confused, too, since (despite your subject line), I thought we
determined this was a Javascript -- and not Java -- issue!

I doubt very much your bank's Web site requires you to have Java
installed!

thanks daave, me too; as the error message says javascript & their, ahem
"tech" guy says this"
It’s definitely a problem with your JAVA. Here’s what I want you to do. Go
on to WWW.java.com it will ask you “do you have the latest version?” or
something like that. It will then either tell you that you do have the
latest version of JAVA or it will advise you to update your JAVA and you
should be able to do it on that same page. Let me know."

i don't know - again reaching that point where i want to hurl the pc thru
the window onto the street below!

I think you may be misreading that; doesn't it actually it's for XP AND
Vista? There is no such thing as "XPVista" so I assume you may have
midread it.

Gee, you're getting quite a runaround, aren't you? It does sound like
the Java you do have is so old it's not usable anymore. The link you
were sent to was good, but here's one that will make it easier:
-- Go to http://www.sun.com/download/
-- There should be 8 boxes there: the upper left one is called simply
Java.
-- Click the Java box and that will take you to a page to download
version 6, update 14, the latest version for personal computers. That
is what you need.
-- Click the Free Java Download button on that page and you'll go to
another screen that says it's for "Windows Vista, XP, 2000, 2003 and
2008 Server ". And, there's another button there to click to download
Java.
-- Click THAT one and the download will begin. Be sure to save it to a
folder where you'll be able to find it.
-- Once it's downloaded, shut down any programs you might be using, do
a Restart, go to that folder and run the program you just downloaded.
Java applications should work OK for you now. The usual indication
that a java application is downloading and about to run is an arrow or
other small symbol running in a curcular motion.

If you have any problems, check back, but I don't think you will. The
screens, once you click that upper-left Java picture, are all self
explanatory and the only unexpected thing is, they make you clidk to
downoad it more than once. Stupid, but it's always been that way AFAIK.

Once you have it installed, it should ask to be updated on its own in
the future. It has a checker that goes out to see if there are any
updates available and if there are notifies you of them. I use it and
it works well; no ads, junk or anything else associated with it; works
just the way it's supposed to.

Best of luck,

Twayne`
