Zero Touch XP Deployment

I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions or feedback regarding
Windows 2000 -> Windows XP deployment. We have approximately 3000
computers that will need to be upgraded located over 60 sites.

Upgrading vs. Clean-install ?
Personality migration ?
Single vs. Dual partitions ?

Thanks

I would recommend a clean-install (scripted, ris:ed or imaged)

You can use USMT to transfer the user settings and data from the old
computer.

One single partition works fine...(it is pretty common to have two for
laptops)

The process would be (simplified)

1. backup user data usingUSMT (scanstate) on the source computer, put
the data store on a server
2. Wipe and load the computer with the new os
3. Install the apps (preferably using AD/GPO or SMS)
4. restore user data using USMT (loadstate)

What you need to watch for in the coming weeks is a couple of three tools
announcements from Microsoft.

1) Business Desktop Deployment Standard and Enterprise editions (Enterprise
includes Zero Touch Installation and Provisioning)

2) SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack

3) USMT 2.6 - already released

The main portal for all things related to Desktop Deployment is:

Hope this helps!
