I'm planning to give my computers a "once over" tomorrow - a spring clean so to speak ;) I'm upgrading my main machine (not planned, but I bought some cheap upgrades!) and going over the network at the same time.

How have you got your computers set up in your house? Do you have a single PC, or about 5 with servers and media centres?

I've got a cheapo PC connected as my "server" 24/7 which hosts CD images from games I've bought, along with documents and work. This connects to the router via a standard cable, as do 2 other PCs (including mine). I've got a PDA which uses the wireless part of the router if needed - but I'm living in a flat with WiFi users everywhere so I've made sure its pretty secure!

The setup works pretty well, with my documents being backed up at the touch of a button each day - although this is going to be automatic to a Maxtor external drive once I clean everything up. (Including daily backups of the PC Review server at night! So thats 3 backups each day in different places now ;))

Four computers, hard wired networked, Router, ADSL ethernet modem, two shared printers, one non-shared scanner.

One computer currently up for sale though, as I rarely use it. One other computer is my daughters, so I just got two, really, 'main' one and one for video and audio, creation and editing.

Backups using DVD-R for data, Acronis True Image V8.0 to seperate drives for full system backup. All done manually.

Two computers and a laptop, wireless network with a router and cable modem.

One main one, the other I use to experiment with new software/hardware so it doesn't matter when it all goes wrong! :D

Three computers, Main rig, secondary rig and a laptop. The secondary rig at the moment is not in use. Have wifi in both main rig and laptop as well as Bluetooth capable. Using wireless PCMCIA modem at 144 kbps on the laptop (CDMA techmology) which I acquired in January this year.

1x Computer in my room (Highest spec - 2.8GHz P4, 512Mb RAM, 9800pro, IC7-G, SATA RAID 0)
1x Office computer (A bit slower - 2.8GHz P4, 512Mb RAM, 9600XT, IC7-G, SATA HDD)
1x Computer in sisters room (Fair whack slower - Athlon 2000, Abit KV7, 5700LE, SATA HDD)
1x Living room computer (Slow. Duron 1400, 256Mb RAM, Integ. Video, Quantum Fireball HDD)

1x Lexmark USB printer
1x Hewlett Packard 850c Printer

All networked via cables run through the attic...

Networking equipment:
1x Mentor ADSL Modem running Conexant Hasbani firmware
1x Netgear DG814 Modem 4 port switch
1x Netgear FS105 autosensing switch.

The conexant modem plugs in to the netgear modem switch (Modem function disabled) which plugs into the switch... to allow computers with any type of cable to connect to the network and receive the 2048Kb/ps ADSL connection we get from zetnet.

And thats our setup :)

here is mine, plus a problem

great. since we are at it, here is something:
I've got a

PIV 2.4 /1gb RD-Ram/2x80gb HDD and 10/100mbps realtek NIC desktop

and a Sony Vaio Centrino 2.13ghz/1gb Ram/100GB HDD and a 10/100/1000 built-in realtek NIC laptop

I linked them through an AceLink 8 port fast ethernet switch with 10/100 auto negotiatio/full wire speed/non blocking.

the problem is, the connection is so slow between them, never exceeds 15% of the bandwidth.
is it normal? is it possible to make use of all the available bandwidth? and how?

knowing that I have assigned IP numbers (i.e. not set to auto) and the link speed is 100 Full duplex (also not auto). Any thoughts? thanks!
