xpsp2 install, xp system crash

I installed xpsp2 at the insistance of microsoft. My system has crashed,
gone completely to a blue screen. I was running IE 6.0 as I don't like what
ie 7.0 does to the system. I cannot get my original disk to reboot my
system. When I did the install of xpsp2, I copied the disk to save it for a
backup. I cannot get my system to reboot with the original equipment disk.
When I did the xpsp2 install, I did the proffesional/developer install. I was
instructed to do this by microsoft even though I have xp home edition. Can
anybody help. I called Dell, they said its my hard drive..why I thought? It
was fine before the install? I can't afford to have someone backup the data,
starting at $500.00, don't think I need a new hard drive. Just need to
figure out how to get my system to reboot...any suggestions? I have a Dell
Dimension 4300 s, 512 mb RAM, 60 gig hd. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
Thanks

I installed xpsp2 at the insistance of microsoft.

Why, what was going on with the PC that you contacted MS?
My system has crashed,
gone completely to a blue screen.

Full details please--what is going on when the screen appears and what does
it say?

I was running IE 6.0 as I don't like what
ie 7.0 does to the system. I cannot get my original disk to reboot my
system. When I did the install of xpsp2, I copied the disk to save it
for a
backup. I cannot get my system to reboot with the original equipment
disk.

Full details please--what are you attempting to do and what happens when you
try?
When I did the xpsp2 install, I did the proffesional/developer install. I
was
instructed to do this by microsoft even though I have xp home edition.

I have never heard of this so I cannot comment.

Can

Determine what type of hard drive you have, go to the maker's web site,
download the maker's diagnostic software and test your drive. The software
runs from a floppy disk. There also may be a diagnostic program on your
hard drive if you can get to it.

Mr. Badour:

I am tring to reinstall windows xp home edition. I was contacted by
microsoft with automatic updates, saying that my system was suceptible to
security issues and to download xpsp2. When I wrote to microscoft about
doing the updates, I was told to go ahead and do the xpsp2
professional/develper install. I have the home edition...not the
professional edition. After installing the updates, my system has crashed, I
cannot use the original disk from dell to reinstall windows xp home edition.
Dell will not provide product support and it's difficult to say the least to
get any assistance from microsoft with this issue. I have a blue screen,
fatal error and cannot reboot my system. That is the problem.

You must provide exact details of what is happening in order for someone to
help.

Saying "I cannot use the original disk from dell to reinstall windows xp
home edition" tells me nothing. Tell us exactly what you are doing, step by
step, and what happens when you try?

Saying, "I have a blue screen, fatal error and cannot reboot my system" is
not helpful. When does the blue screen appear and what is the error message
verbatim?

Why can't you use the original disk? Have you lost it? Is it damaged?
Please provide details!

What is the model number of your Dell? Please describe all the disks you
*do* have. Do you have a Windows XP installation disk? Or it it a
recovery/restore disk?

Were you attempting a clean install or a repair install?

Also, please provide *all* the text of your fatal error.
