XP won't start (hangs) if Yamaha CD/RW drive is connected

If my Yamaha CD/RW drive (model CRW2200EZ) is connected up in my PC
XP will get to the copyright screen and just hang there. If I shut down an
disconnect the CD/RW, XP will start just fine. I can't find any issues about thi
in the yamaha web site or on the Microsoft website. Has anyone seen this
Any resolution ideas? Thanks very much

First check the settings of the jumpers PRIMARY, SLAVE device and make sure
there is no conflicts between the devices. Especially if you connect the
CD/RW on the same IDE channel as your hard disk (which is highly
UNrecommended)

Emil-- thanks for the quick reply. I haven't checked the settings yet as you suggested, but the CD/RW and the DVD were working before I upgraded from ME to XP, so I didn't think there could be conflicts

You never know
When you assemble a PC system, to make it stable and bugless you'll need 33%
good hardware, 33% good drivers, 33% luck and 1% magic
If you check the jumper settings and everything is OK make sure the Primary
device is the first one on the IDE cable
Also check the BIOS and clear the values for the IDE devices, and then make
it autoconfig again.
As I said: You never know. The computers are just like women

Hi Emil

Thanks again for the reply. What I did was switch the DVD and CD-RW on the IDE bus
and switched which one was master and slave as well. This didn't seem to make a
difference. Finally, I went into the BIOS setup and set the PIO of the CD-RW to 1, from 4
This enabled it to boot without hanging on the copyright screen
This caused another problem, my flat screen display went blank after the copyright display,(!
and I had to power up and down the screen to get the display back. To fix this, I wen
back into BIOS setup and disabled the CD drives for bootup, leaving only the HDD
So both problems are resolved, I think

Thanks again and take care ( be careful about the comparisons between women and computers!

Hi
and WOW!
You did a major system reconfig and obviously you won her respect ;-)
The flat screen display problem reminded me of a problem I had years ago -
my printer didn't wanted to work because of a "buggy" RAM installed in the
PC ;-)
If you want your CD/DVD devices to work at maximum efficiency, occasionally
check their PIO / DMA modes in Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controlers ->
Properties of corresponding IDE Channel -> Advansed settings
(for XP operating system)
If you see anything different from Ultra DMA mode 2 (DMA 1 or even worse
PIO) your CD/DVDs are not working at maximum speed
The only known to me cure is uninstal of the IDE Channel and restart
I have wasted a dozen CD-R disks until I found this article from Micro
